Hi everyone, I've adopted a four year old smooth coat intact male Chihuahua. He's the apple of my eye and has integrated into the family extremely well and comes most places with me. He's been checked, inoculated, clipped etc

This is his third home and I imagine he has been moved on as hes been tricky to houdtrain but is doing very well now, all he needed was a toilet name and frequent opportunities and lots of praise. He had the nasal spray K.Cough vaccine and has had a mild version of the virus.
I had a eureka moment today that I'd like to share with others... He absolutely hated the kibbled dried food and was either throwing it up or starving himself but because of its high quality nutrition I didn't want to stop using it so I've ground it all up to a smooth crumb and mix it with some wet food and weh-hey, he's eaten the lot!!

Welcome to the forum.
I'm glad he's healthy and adjusting to his new home.
I've never thought about grounding up kibble and mixing with can food. Even when my dogs refuse to eat kibble I just mix their kibble with can food any they'll eat all of it. But I'll keep that in mind because they might get "smart" one day, lol

I'm glad to welcome you to the forum! I do hope that you decide to neuter this little guy. It will prevent prostate problems and most important, any ideas about marking his territory. At least most male dogs.

As for the kibble, I wonder if he has a problem with a large kibble. Have you tried a 'small breed kibble"? Just wondering. My chihuahuas don't like large kibble either. They do fine on the small breed kibble though.

Hi Susan, thank you for your warm welcome. I will most definitely have him neutered as he's a proper "lad" at the moment if you know what I mean. At the moment he's on Royal Canin Chihuahua small kibble and still turns his nose up. I phoned Royal Canin today to see if they did an even smaller kibble but they just said pour boiling water on it....

Welcome, we would love to see photos when you get a chance!

Have you tried giving him a different kibble that maybe he likes? Honestly...Royal Canin is not a brand I would ever feed to my kids personally. There are much better foods out there. I'd call it a "middle ground" food - certainly better than a lot of others (Purina, Pedigree, etc.), but also certainly not as good as many others out there

L-A, I use beef/chicken broth/stock warmed in the microwave to add to the kibble. It will soften the kibble if left to soak it in for 10-15 minutes. I use a grain free kibble. Lots of them on the market now. Whole Dog Journal has a huge list of grain free kibbles. Some of them are:Acana,Halo,Merrick, and Wellness. There is also freeze dried foods: Stella and Chewies, KiwiPeak and of course some frozen raw. Lots of ideas.

What food would you recommend? He hated AVA too.
Below is a photo not long after I first got him, he didn't look happy at all. I'll take some more of him now.
