Choosing a Chi
Hi! I am not yet a chi owner, but I have been working with a breeder to let her know what I am looking for. This will be my first dog, and I have chosen this as the best breed for me after doing much research. This will be an emotional support dog for me, and I am excited to get one. My mother never let me have a dog, and it is only just now at nearly age 50 that I feel I am home enough to properly care for a dog. Note that our household consists of me, my spouse, and 15-year old daughter who has Aspergers. She also really wants a dog, but she does not know that I am looking. This will, however, be my dog. I am open to a second chi if all goes well with the first.
I go to visit the breeder tomorrow to meet the available dogs. I really like the looks of the long coat, and I think the longer fur would be soothing to me while petting the dog. However, there is only one long coat available, and he is reportedly very shy and will likely not be open to going out and about to new places. I am mostly a homebody, but I do want to socialize the dog and want it to feel comfortable with our immediate family. The others available are short coat, and several are reportedly outgoing and social, with much more willingness to interact with different people. I am thinking the personality is more important than the coat, but I wanted to get opinions from those more familiar with the breed.
For those who chose a dog from a breeder, what did you look for? Any advice?
