Default New chihuahua dog owner.

Hi, I am a young man (30) who recently bought a female chihuahua pup with my girlfriend. She is 3 months old at the moment. I mainly came to the website to ask for help and apparently I need to post here in order to ask help.

I tried to make a post in the training section but still couldn't so I'll ask my question here.

I'm used to older, working dogs. Life changes happens, I had cancer, my girlfriend also has, 5 times actually. She has a cane. We lost the house... Need a dog that can exercise indoor when I am not home.

Anyways..! Point is, a chihuahua was the breed we decided according to our new ''lifestyle''.

So far, so good, it's been almost two weeks. From day 1, she has her bed at the end of ours. When my girlfriend goes to sleep, she goes too, will not move or make a sound when I go to bed later. She will go to the toilet in the morning when I wake up. The pee pad or whatever it's called is in the closet (we emptied it) so she can always go but she won't. She picked that real quick and except for rare accidents she learned real quick.

She's a real good dog. In the evening it's playtime and some obedience and she plays and learn real fast. She learned a few commands during that time; sitting, standing up on two feet, staying, coming to her name. She's well behaved. I give her attention and treat only when she's calm, I try to encourage her to stay alone. Mainly what I am trying to say we have a routine and follow the guide line. She's the perfect dog except for ONE thing. Sadly, we live in a condo and hopefully this won't be a deal breaker.

When we leave her alone it's a freaking nightmare in a closed room. Never once did I open up the door, or gave any sort of attention if she whines. Not once. My girlfriend also won't. She will stay clean, she doesn't destroy stuff but she'll bark, howl, whine for a reallll long time. I put a frozen kong stuffed with peanut butter. 2 chewing bones (nylabone and a hartz one for chewing puppy) that she will only have when left alone. She has toys, blanket... etc etc... I tried to leave the place in silence, with music and it's always the same.

I started from the beggining with 15 min sessions, and working from there gradually, to now 2h45. Won't open up door until it's silence and calm. I start this session at the same time everyday. Always the same. For 20-30 min she will chew on the bones and than she will make a fuss for at least two hours. This goes on and off in different intensity.

From what I've read, after one week everyone was mostly over with it. Why she won't. What Im wondering is how long, what you guys experience was. I have been sticking to the same training routine, I have been constant, since day 1. Never once she had any attention when whining so I don't get it.

What room does she get left in? When you guys leave. Your bedroom? I'm wondering if it be worth to leave her in a different room. Maybe in the living room where she might not "freak out" as much.
Do you leave her in a crate or Xpen? Or just "free range" when you leave her
Does she only entertain herself for about 20/30 minutes? And then starts crying/whining afterwards?
She must be very attached to you and your GF.
Do you guys ever allow her to have "alone" time. If she has a Xpen with or without a kennel you can leave her in their even when your home with toys and maybe even feed her there. Hopefully she'll be relaxed and not feel the need to whine.

I use a pen for my dogs. They can see out, yet are confined. I close the door at night, otherwise it is open. The name of the pen is Iris. If you leave her where she can't see you or the usual 'scenery' then that is upsetting. The other option is a excersize pen. Just imagine if you were suddenly put in a room that you couldn't see out of, and you could hear your loved ones.? I would try to leave her out, confined, and see how it goes. She will still be 'alone', but not shut in a room. Try it. good luck with the condo. Have you had complaints?

She's in our bedroom. She's able to free roam since she's a clean, none-destructive doy. It's really only the whining when left alone that is a ''problem''. She doesn't bark, only howl or whine.

Yes, she will entertain herself for 20-30 min, than start to whine, for a long period of time than she will calm down. I've read that it should be 15-30 min but she can do it for an hour or two. It seems to be lasting less and less everyday but not to the point of it being 15-30 min.

We encourage time alone with treats, affection and when we are the house she will spend time alone by herself.

The bedroom is where the food is. Peepad is in a empty wardrobe. She has her toy and bed there and she really enjoy the sun.

My girlfriend is working full time and I'm supposed to be working soon so I try to make full use of my avaible to train her to be left alone. Really alone. We don't know for sure if it's the same thing when we are out of the house. When we get back we don't hear a sound. She looks outside from the window but doesn't make a sound.

I think I'm just being impatient but it gets better everyday. Realistically if that's the only problem we have to work temporary I think we have the greatest puppy. One day at a time.

It does sound like you have a pretty awesome puppy other than the whining when left alone.
If the time of her crying is decreasing than that means your doing good.

Can a mod delete this post of mine, (all of it) since it's useless, I tried to post saying it was getting worst, and somehow wasn't approved, I was being polite but obviously pissed and it's still getting worst to some next level and I am still pissed so I don't see the point of having this post anymore, I only came for help and apparently nothing seems to work.

She's crying/whining for longer periods of time? Then originally or just haven't made any improvement?
Have you waited for her to completely whine all the way before opening the door even if it's a couple of hours?
What's happening to the dog since it seems like she is gerting worse? Thankfully she's still young and I'm sure can get rehome to someone who can deal with her or maybe even be accepted into a no kill rescue/shelter.
Good luck.
Also not sure if it'll get deleted.
