Default Newbie Intro

Hello All,

We brought home our first chihuahua "Mango" on 7/28/18. I have had numerous pets in my life and only a few of them have been dogs. We also currently have 2 cats, 1 rat (her sister died of old age recently), and 1 parakeet. I was researching and looking for a few months and had narrowed it down to a poodle mix or long coat chihuahua. I was looking for a darker color female puppy 5-10 pounds and somehow ended up with a white male 6 month old dog that is 3.5 pounds. But we love him to pieces and he is very smart and is doing well & is an avid snuggler. Our 12 year old daughter has already taught him "sit" and working on "lay down".

I have been researching how to socialize him with the cats and how to train him to let us know when he needs to go outside to potty. He has been doing well with puppy pads in our master bathroom when we cannot supervise him.
I am looking forward to reading more threads and learning more about chihuahuas.

I love his name, cute.
I'm glad he's fitting right in 🙂

I would let the cats get to know Mango on their own terms. If you have a crate/pen it would make it 'safer' for the cats. If you see the cats and Mango is 'interested', I'd bring out the treats. Every time the cats appear, give Mango treats. He should learn quickly that cats means treats! On the other hand, be aware that cats have claws. They can do a lot of harm to a 3.5# dog. My declawed siamese jumped into the pen with my baby chi, boxed her ears, terrifying her. They are still just tolerating each other. So be careful!

Great advice! We have an Iris pen that I had to cover with plastic cardboard & zip ties since Mango learned to climb out already. We can use that.
He is tethered to us with his leash most of the time, but earlier on when he used to stay close to us & we had not learned to tether yet, he got swatted by one of the cats because he chased them. Luckily it was an ear instead of an eye (we treated it & it has healed very well.)
He has gotten better. Less growling & barking & more reverence for the cats. The cats are interested & will sit fairly close by when they know he is tethered.
