Hi All,

I have had my little guy (chihuahua mix) for 6 years now. We adopted him when he was about 1(shelter wasn't sure about his age). He is a sweet little fella who is much more attached to my wife but does like to play fetch with me when he is in a mood.

Lately he has slowed down a bit which we thought was may be due to middle age but we took him to vet last week to get his cataract check and concerns about him being little less active and the vet said she can hear a grade 4 murmur. I was hoping to get some suggestions but can't post any questions in "Chihuahua health" forum. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

Hi I don't know much about dogs and heart murmurs but a member on here (Susan) also has a dog with a heart murmur.
Is the dog breathing heavy or coughing?

Hi, I am the owner of a dog with a grade 3 murmur. She has the cough, but nothing else. She is not on any meds---yet. That being said, I've had several dogs that had murmurs that led to congestive heart failure. They were on medications. One was on the medications for 3 years! Very rare for a dog to last that long. Another one lasted only 9 months. So it is really something that depends---the vet, the dog, and the owner! I will not do the medication route, UNLESS the dog is uncomfortable. Lasix, and the heart medications help, but do not cure. If this dog is uncomfortable then I'd do what ever the vet suggests. If you have any other questions feel free to post in the general forum.
