Welcome to the forum! Tell us more about your pups. Are they male/female or the same sex? Smooth coated or long? Names? This is a nice forum. Lots of good advice to anything related to chihuahuas. Just ask!

Default Hi

I’m new too.
I have had Cozmo for about 2 years. I never had a chihuahua before but plenty of dogs of all breeds.
When I got him he was skinny, not neutered, had a hernia, had 4 bad teeth and knee problems. $1,200.00 later he has gained 2 pounds, a good healthy weight, has no teeth trouble because the bad ones are gone and he is neutered and has a fixed hernia. He is 11 years old.
He had one undesended testical so they had to find the other one before it was removed.
He was so bad with marking before neutering he marked every room in the house before I knew, sneaky boy. He has stopped now but I still put a belly band on him at night.
He has a heart murmur and a damaged trachea. His hearing is not good anymore but his eyesight is good.

He goes everywhere with me, even when he isn’t there all his white hairs are with me.
He is crabby and won’t let anyone but me pick him up. The vet has to put him to sleep with a little gas to do any examination. He’s that grumpy.
His favorite thing is to sleep on my lap.
If I get too close to his face he still growls at me but he hasn’t bit me, well once when I forced a pill down his throat. Won’t do that again.
I love him to pieces even though my family wanted me to give him to a rescue. Nope, he is my dog and my responsibility. He is becoming a very good dog. He even plays with me sometimes. Bites my fingers lightly in play and sometimes a toy. Before his teeth hurt so bad he couldn’t play.

Hi Cozmo's mama! How wonderful of you to adopt an older chihuahua. That's a lot of money to spend! Many people wouldn't think of spending that on a dog! So glad YOU did! If you ever have to give Cozmo another pill try this method. Take 3 cubes of bread (not too big) and dig little holes in the center. In the first one put a piece of hotdog, or some other delicious morsel. Make sure the piece is tiny. In the 2 piece of bread put the pill and cover it with cream cheese, p.butter or some other wonderful tasting stuff. As soon as he has the 1st one eaten, give him the pill, while at the same time show him the 3rd piece with tasty stuff on it, while he is still hopefully swallowing the pill. You have to work fast, show him all three, and have the next one ready in front of his nose, while he is 'working' on the last one.

I have a 10 year old chi that has been taking phenobarbital for epilepsy for years now. I no longer have to give her the 3 pieces; I just give her the pill covered with p.butter! She actually begs for it now. (I also give her a little milk afterwards too)

Hi Cozmo's Mom. You are amazing. I'm glad you chose to keep him and work with him. That is definitely a lot of money but I'm sure he was worth every penny.

Susan, I also do the peanut butter when the dogs need to take a pill and works every time.

When I get a new dog, I give them a tiny piece of bread with some p.butter on it, with no pill, just to get them used to it. Cream cheese works too for my dogs.
