Unhappy Elmo wheezing?

Hello everyone
Elmos breathing has been getting worse over the past month or so. Nothing very dramatic but when he snores which he has done for a few years his breathing is sounding like a wheeze? He sounds very congested and has always lots of allergies as he sneezes all the time. I don't use air freshener or carpet refresher or anything like that. The other day he was coughing and choking as he had something in his throat and throwing up phlegm. Then the day after he was fine. I am taking home to the vet today to get his claws trimmed and have asked if they could check him out as I am worried about his breathing.
He is 10 now and we are old members of this site and have just rejoined after quite a few years break. Any help suggestions much appreciated.

Hope your vet had some answers about Elmo for you.
We have a 14 year old boy who has a heart murmur and coughs and wheezes a bit. He is on heart meds and Lasix to help with fluid. He is checked by our vet every 3 months for updates.
We also have a 13 year old little guy who has allergies and takes a half of a Zyrtec daily which is on our vet's advice. He sneezes, coughs, snots, and has a stuffy head constantly.

Sure hope Elmo gets something that helps him. The seniors are like us humans, age brings them "trials" too!

Hi
The vet diagnosed Elmo with a upper air way infection . She says it could be kennel cough but she is not sure but to she gave me so cough medicine to help his mucus in powdered form. or it could be parasites so she gave him a big worming tablet (which I'm not sure how to give him?. We also got some very small tramadol tablets for his breakthrough pain as he takes Metacam on a daily basis is for his back and I wanted something he could take as well if needs it. He is to take one every twelve hrs as needed.
She said to give them a call in a week to see how he is doing .
Of he dosent improve they want to do a chest X-ray.
All very worrying. I'm praying that the cough medicine works.

I have a chi that has such a short muzzle that she can't eat and breathe without choking. She has had this 'problem' since I got her at 17 weeks. I soak her kibble and she takes one kibble at a time out of the broth, and eats it. Takes her a while to eat! She also sounds congested most of the time. Vet says it is congenital. I HATE breeders that breed for short muzzles for 'show' purposes. This breeder, who cut any ties with me a month after I bought her, because I was questioning her about Bonnie. She never registered the litter, and I never got a birth date! I know the week she was born, but not the actual date. I got a pedigree, but where the birth date was supposed to be, was blank!

Hopefully, the vet could help Elmo. Good luck, and let us know.

Hi Susan
I'm sorry you had a bad breeder.
My breeder was fab and Elmos face in proportion. He has never had wheezing before until he got to his age (10). He seems to be improving . X

Could it be asthma?

My father was not the kind of person you would expect to come down with asthma, but that's what the doctors say it is and it definitely affects his quality of life.

I seem to have been very lucky with Laurel as well and made sure to send her breeder a "thank you" text. I want to put a deposit on a relative in another year or so if I still want a second dog.

I don't know why her rehoming fee was only $500 but this woman obviously knows and loves dogs and sees her work as a kind of activism. There is a lot of DV in my area and don't even get me started on family farms getting pushed off the land and all the other problems everywhere in the world today.

Laurel is a crossbreed, but she is a working dog doing what she was bred to do. I have fond memories of growing up with Shelties, but I am not a sheep and I do not need to be herded. I am alone in this world and I need companionship and protection.

I'm glad Elmo is feeling better and hope all of our fur kids have long, healthy lives ahead of them. They certainly deserve it no matter how big or small they are or how pure their bloodlines are.
