Default Chi and bird

Ok I just posted in the newbie section but this is really why I joined. I am hoping for some advice:
I currently have two chi's, two cats, and a Senegal parrot which if your unfamiliar is about the size of a cockatiel.
My Senegal is my baby. I had him since before I had kids and he rules the house. All of my pets get along and no one bothers him. He is out all the times we are homes on his cage and playground.
Two weeks ago I found and have since adopted a new black and white chi (I believe)
He has been more that interested in my bird. However my bird LOVES to pester my animals. He sits on the edge of his playground eating and dropping crumbs, ect... Anyway last Friday my bird got down and started wondering around the floor when I was in the kitchen for a second (He never does this so I don't know if something started him and he flew down or what)
Anyway the new dog got ahold of his tail. My husband saw what was going on and had to get the new dog off of him. My poor bird lost most of his tail feathers and was quite shooken up. The new dog looked guilty and I yelled at him for awhile and told him NO!! I really think he understood. Poor thing probably was yelled at a lot before he got to my house as he is a little skiddish. My daughter tried to do some clicker training with him and it scared him to pieces.
I am just worried that once he went after my bird that is somehow his instinct and it won't be broken. My other two don't have any desire to do anything to my bird and I am hoping this one will learn and follow but any suggestions on what I could do would be great.
My poor bird is still out when I am in the room but I have to put him away whenever I leave now and his is getting MAD. And he now seems pretty unfazed by what happened. OUr new doggie hasn't looked at him much since the incident so I am hopeful we can get him trained but like I said any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I have an african grey...and some chickens. Both my dogs would chase and probably attack the chickens given a chance.
One day I went out for 20 mins and forgot to put the grey in his cage. He was on a tree he plays on. He hardly ever comes down onto the floor. The dogs were loose in the back garden where this tree is. When I came home Elmo the grey was indoors on the arm of the sofa.
Ever since that time the dogs give the chickens a lot of respect! I think Elmo sorted them out good and proper. He has a big beak and a scary squark! I will never know what happened but the dogs totally ignore all birds now.
So all i can suggest to you is expose your new chi (thanks for rescuing him by the way) to a scary bird who will teach him his place!

I used to have a grey too I actually rehomed him because he HATED me with a passion!! I got him from a man who raised him and he loved men but hated women. He loved my husband although the feeling wasn't mutual.
I really think things will be ok with the bird and the dog. Problem is my bird is way too confident. I was hoping this put him in his place a bit but I am thinking not.. Last night he was hanging over the edge taunting my cat and other dog. My new dog Beau hasn't really looked at him since this happened but I will just have to be extra careful.

I wouldn't trust the new dog with the bird while you are not around. to me , its just not worth it... I would make sure the dog is in an area where he cant get at the bird.

I've been a bird lover for the past 30 years.
I have an African grey parrot who is in his 20's. I have a cockatiel that I has since she was a baby, and now she's 25 years old.
and I have a 3 year old teil that I call baby peep cause he's the baby.
they all have there own room and the dogs cant get at them. but sometimes I do open the shutter doors when i'm around and Minnie loves wacthing the birds. she is very fascinated by them and seems like she wants to be friends with them.
my parrot seems like he wants to interact with the dogs. he barks like the dogs, he copies some of my commands to the dogs and says there names, and when he does it sounds just like me . lol .
but still. my birds mean everything to me. I really really love them. just like I love the dogs. and I wouldn't risk the birds getting hurt.
your lucky that only the feathers got pulled out... they will of course grow back... but the bird could of got really hurt very bad.
so, my advice is , do not risk it. not when you are not around ...

They soon learn that other pets are part of the family and not dinner. When we first brought Mouse home she really wanted to attack the guinea pigs and hamsters. Obviously she was never allowed to be that close to them, and never unsupervised. Now only 6 months later she is completely oblivious to them. She can be in the room when we are feeding them, and remain totally relaxed. Even stray piggies running directly in front of her no longer stimulate her prey drive, she is more interested in pinching their veggies.
Your new boy is still settling in, still finding his feet and learning the rules. I'm sure he will be able to live in harmony with your parrot in time.

I had a Chi mix that I totally trusted around my other animals. She was great with everything from mice and rats to birds and rabbits but one day she killed one of my parrots so I will never trust another dog around birds again. Both of my current Chihuahuas have high pray drives so are always wanting to eat my birds and other small animals so have to be banned from the room while the other critters are out.

I have 2 Parrotlets, they use to get out of the cage daily, but since we got Ike, I can't let them out . He goes after them and sits at the bottom of their cage watching them, with hope in his eyes they will come out. I feel bad for them. Here is a picture of them.
