Default Sadie & Gibbs issue Need Help (Long post)

As some of y'all have probably seen my hound Sadie turned 15 on New Year's Eve. The last few months I have noticed she sleeps more and has back hip joint issues so i increased her joint supplements. Sadie is still crazy Sadie happy and full of life. Well this weekend I noticed a toe on her back foot was swollen. She was too hyper at the time to look so I waited for her to go take a nap and went to check the toe. After inspection I noticed she has a growth (can't really see a whole growth her entire toe is hard and swollen but in between toes looks like a growth but could be rubbing) in her back middle toe.

I was a Vet tech for many years as a teenager and the growth doesnít look good. I have a feeling it might be the C word. After being a Vet tech for many years and seeing what some treatments do to pets I promised myself and my kids that I would never do that to them. Well I went and grabbed my supplies and chased her around the yard working on her toe. And yes I meant CHASED her around the yard. I cleaned out where it is rubbing between the others toes and gave her some arnica (pain), Olive Leaf (she has had issues with cyst in the past and it gets rid of them), OL-Immune (for infection as her cysts get infected and abscess) and some iodine/ Neosporin to try to keep dirt out of the wound. I am also going to put her on Mushrooms like Huly is for his tumor (has not grown in a year and looks like it might be shrinking) as it has cancer fighting properties.

I am really hoping and praying I am wrong. I am hoping it is just another cyst with being in her toe looks weird. I am not going to take her to the Vet as I am not going to do a test to determine (honestly I donít want to know) and if it is the C word I am not removing her foot or putting her into holistic chemo etc. Same as Hulyís growth on his mouth hence the mushroom; if it gets bigger we will remove the growth but not taking any of his jaw.
Am I wrong in this attitude? I keep second guessing myself.

Also with all of this going on Gibbs is getting bored. Sadie does not play with him anymore, the chis do not want to be outside long to play (itís too cold lol) and he is starting to howl (through the sonic eggs, and no bark shock collar) and look for any neighboring dog to howl at. This morning it was at 5AM. I am considering bringing in a foster hound and that maybe will help him some. He hates walks! HATES THEM HATES THEM HATES THEM! He lies down and looks at me like Mom we have a car! He loves to play with others and if it benefits him he will do it but otherwise forget it! If anyone has ever tried to drag a 55lb basset hound you know what I am talking about. I need something to calm him and entertain him. I have tried holistic and raw bones fresh from butcher. With a regular rawhide he goes through it in seconds. Joint bones are not allowed. He has NEVER shown this side before but I have tried a holistic cooked and raw from the butcher joint bone and each time he went into a resource guarding mode. He would go after any dog that walked by it. Needless to say he lost that bone to my trash can. Last try was the raw knuckle bone and he grabbed Sadie and dragged her away from it and growled at his BFF Sonny. I can put him on Rescue Remedy but I am at my wits end on what to do.

I am really stressed, scared and need help!

I am sorry you are going through this. I think you are doing the right thing for Sadie. I wouldn't be putting a 15 year old dog through surgery or aggressive treatments. 15 is an amazing age for a Bassett, she is a credit to you and how well you have cared for her.
I honestly thing Gibbs is playing up because he knows she is not well. Another hound would be my suggestion, as long as it is something Sadie would be happy about too. If changes would upset her, I would put her needs first at this point.
Are there any groups you could take him to for some mental and physical stimulation? Something like tracking that he would really enjoy? Or how about regular playdates with another Bassett or similar breed?

I have thought about that like a dog park or something. Not sure how he would do there but when I leave for work it is dark and when I get home it is dark). Also anything work related Gibbs would NOT do he is too Lazy he just loves to romp and play. We have had play dates with friends dogs and both love it. Sadie has loved some of our other fosters (only one annoyed her) she LOVES everything. I honestly think he is getting worse as he knows something is wrong too. I just keep second guessing myself on everything.

If Sadie would enjoy having a foster dog around, then go for it, it sounds like a win-win.

yeah as long as it is an older mellow hound I think she would be ok. I do not think she could handle a young pup. She still chases and plays with BG & Sonny though lol

I second your thought about not doing 'heroric' measures with Sadie. About the bones; can you use a pen/crate? That would give Gibbs a safe place to chew and not be disturbed. I have 3 chi's that HATE walks too! They run when they see a leash.!
