Default VENT!!!!!!! food dilemma

OMG so I was reading about what other ppl r feeding their chihuahuas and everyone on here is feeding raw or specialty foods to their pets.......so I seen a link where you can check dog food ratings and I am currently feeding my 2 chis purina puppy chow which I thougt was good for them untill I read the review.. I ALMOST DIED!!!!!!!! Because its junk that they are eating and nutrition is very important to me when it comes to my children 2sons and 2 chis. I breastfed my son thomas untill he turned 1 becaue I would never give my son nasty formula and I am currently breastfeeding my 6month old son and will continue untill he turns 1 aswell. My children only get the best and breast is best ao I'm gunna find the doggy equivilant to breast and get it for them n donate the food I already have to a shelter or somthin.......ugh really feel awful about the trash my chis are eating. Gross!!!!!

Ziwipeak would probably be a really easy option for you as you sound like a busy mom! It is basically dehydrated raw food. You don't get the dental benefit of feeding a raw diet, but you also don't have to deal with tons of raw meat around your kids. Of course it is perfectly safe to feed a raw diet when you have children there are just logical precautions to take which I'm sure you could figure out as you obviously have thought through your kid's care

Ugh...yeah. Been there done that. Makes you feel terrible right?! I always fed my labs Purina & Pedigree simply because I didn't know any different. Anyway, I agree ZiwiPeak is a great option. A bit pricey...probably would last your two Chi's 3 weeks for a 2.2lb bag ($27ish in our area). But there are some better kibbles out there as well if the ZiwiPeak is too steep. Taste of the Wild, Acana, Fromm, Orijen....all are great options. There is also Honest Kitchen which is a dehydrated raw but has more fruits & veggies compared to ZiwiPeak (which has none). Their Keen is pretty reasonable price wise. Has a grain in it (organic oats) but I'd probably go with this before a kibble myself.

Anyway, I'm very happy you researched enough to find out the truth! Pet food can contain some very scary things indeed. Good luck in your search to find a better food!

Good for you for doing some reading/research!! The big pet food companies have duped millions of people with their ad campaigns showing fresh foods in the commercials. Of course we buy into it, thinking it is good! You are MILES ahead of most of the public by doing your research and deciding to feed something better. So happy about that! I have no doubt that you will find an excellent diet to feed your pups now that you know what to look for and how to research foods.

Definitely agreed!
The big companies such as Purina, Science Diet, etc. pay millions in advertising to make the public believe they are the best.

Good for you to make a change for the best.

Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings is a good site to find quality food and ingredient lists.

I felt the same way when I found out the reality of most commercial dog foods. =( Don't worry, like others have said we've all been there before. The important thing is the fact that you took the time to research; that shows what a great dog mommy you are.

In my opinion (don't want to offend anyone) the best nutrition you can feed is prey model raw. It is surprisingly inexpensive for a small dog and once you get comfortable and catch on with the meal planning it's pretty easy too. There are lots of threads here about helping beginners with raw; not to mention quite a few members (me included!) who started on raw with the help of this forum and would be happy to answer any questions.

Next would be any form of pre-made or dehydrated raw; like Ziwipeak. Even many raw feeders will keep some of this on hand as it's excellent quality. Only downside is it can get expensive, as it's pricier than even doing the raw diet yourself.

If you feel more comfortable with kibble; I will always recommend Taste Of The Wild. The rating sites like dogfoodanalysis or dogfoodadvisor will tell you other high quality foods too; but The High Prairie formula is rated 6 stars on most of those rating sites; and the best part is, it's very cheap too. $11 for a 5lb bag and a little goes a long way.

I felt the same way when I looked up my food on that site. I was feeding little bites for a long time and then one and beyond bc it was corn/wheat free. I was pretty upset at the low quality.. I switched to wysong epigen and like it.

All the best parts of childhood are right there with wagging tails.

Anyone who ever wondered if I was crazy lost all doubt once they saw me with 5 chihuahuas in clothes!!
