Default New Hills Science

I see Hills Science Diet are improving their food - about time, they are obviously reacting to the number of people who are switching off their food.

It will be interesting to see what the exact ingredients will be and percentages of protein etc.,

Science Diet recently acquired a patent for polyethylene, which is a plastic.

Science Diet Acquires Patent to Use Polyethylene

Science Diet has recently acquired a patent to use polyethylene in their products. The purpose is to extend the shelf life of their products. Polyethylene is a common plastic that is widely used to create plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic films, and many more products. Using this plastic in food could be dangerous for you and your pets. Many people are not aware of the potential side effects. It is possible that polyethylene products can cause cancer.

Susan Thixton (Truth about pet foods) wrote about it recently on her site.

Plastic Coated Pet Food Kibble?

While I admire Science Diet trying to keep up with the premium kibble companies and listening to consumers complaints about by products, etc. I still wouldn't trust the company. They have a very clever marketing campaign which makes them look sincere and concerned about providing nutritious foods for pets. However, I would never feed their products.

Yes I agree, they are reacting to consumers voting with their feet!

What do you think of their specific prescription foods though? are there other alternatives? My mother's cat has kidney problems for years now and was put on medication and the Hill's prescription renal food - she's doing really well at 13 years old now.

I have known several people whose dogs/cats did GREAT on Science Diet prescription food. Even though the ingredients were horrible. Labs improved, their conditions improved, etc. So while I wouldn't feed their regular foods, I would consider their prescription foods if I had a pet that had a condition that required it.

Royal Canin also has prescription foods for cats and dogs. They seem to work pretty well, and I think the ingredients are a little better than Hills.
