Default Goodbye little guy

As a lover of chihuahuas, and all dogs for that matter, I take it upon myself to help any animal that may need help. Whenever I see a chihuahua or small dog running around in the street, I stop and pick it up. If they have a tag, I return them to their owner or if they don't, I put up signs to try and find the owner. I really try to avoid taking them to the animal shelter because then you never know what their fate will be. With that being said, I'll begin my story. If you are feint of heart, you may not want to read.*

On Monday I woke up bright and early, in a great mood. I got ready like any other day and got into my car with my sister en route to school. I drove down the street like I did almost every day. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something run across the street. I thought maybe I was just imaging things because I didn't see any small animals around. I made a left turn and then I saw him. A little chihuahua running and sniffing around the planter of a restaurant on the corner. He didn't seem to be with any human so I pulled into the nearest parking lot. My sister and I got out of the car with the intention of capturing him because that street is very busy. We walked up to the restaurant where he was sniffing around. He turned his head and we must have frightened him because he turned and ran out towards the street. My sister and I screamed because we saw what was coming. The street just happened to be empty except for one car heading our way. The little dog leaped into the street at the exact moment the lone car zoomed by. My sister started hysterically crying. I just stood there in shock. It had to have been only a few seconds but it felt like forever. I ran out into the street. I didn't care that the other oncoming cars had to stop and go around me. I bent down next to the poor little dog. The SUV had only hit his head (I'll spare the rest of the details). His little body twitched and I petted his side hoping to calm him down. Even if I had tried to take him to a vet, he wouldn't have made it. The injury was too severe. After a minute of petting him, the twitching stopped and he was gone. I couldn't leave him in the street to get hit again so I stood there trying to think of what to do. A man came out of the restaurant kitchen. He had heard our screams and saw what had transpired. He brought out a small box and picked up the puppy and placed him into it. He took the little dog and my sister and I went back to our car.*

My heart is broken for this little dog. I can't stop thinking about the fact that if I had done one thing different, his fate may not have been so terrible. Not only is my heart broken for the little dog, but for the family who will never know of his whereabouts. He had no collar or tag so I couldn't bring his body or collar to his home.*

So tonight, give your pups an extra kiss and hug in the memory of this little chihuahua. And please, always keep a collar with a tag on your pups and never walk your pups off leash. Rest in peace little guy*

Aw. Such a sad story...I would hate to have seen that. I think what is meant to be will be...perhaps he didn't come from a very nice home if he was left to wander the streets? Either way you can't blame yourself for doing what you thought was best for the pup at the time. At least you were there comforting him in his last moments.

Awe!! I'm so sorry this has happened to you!! This story makes my heart hurt for the little dog & you too. Sometimes bad things happen & it's no ones fault. Dogs can be skiddish when they're loose. Just know that you have a good heart & you were only going to help this baby.

That is the saddest thing I've heard in a long time. I would be traumatized after witnessing something like that. Poor little guy. At least you were there with him in his last moments so he did not die alone.

This is awful. Just thinking that the thing you wanted to avoid happened right in front of your eyes - it is just really awful. I am thinking of you and that gorgeous pup. Thank you for trying to help stop the inevitable.

That is a horrifying experiance, so sad that it had to end that way for the little pup and sorry that you had that happen to you, don't feel bad though you did the best you could within the circumstances.
