Default What's With the Breath?!

GoodNESS! George's breath has been awful! It just smells ROTTEN! If he licks my nose, I can really smell it. It's disgusting. It smells like rotten meat, like what he ate, only rotten.

Could it be teething? He's just recently lost all canines and the adult teeth are coming in one by one. Could it have anything to do with that?

Could it be that I fed him something less than fresh?

Not enough bone?

I thought raw food was supposed to help their breath

Maybe I just haven't smelled how bad it could be with kibble, or even canned food.

What can I do to freshen his breath?

Hmm id say give your vet a call as sometimes bad breath is linked to a underlying issue! It could just be teething as healing gums can smell a bit but it could also be an infection. Maybe best to be on the safe side

A healthy dog who is raw fed will not have stinky breath. My girls had revolting breath when we got them (cheap nasty kibble) and three days on raw sorted it out.
If he is teething, are there any loose teeth that food could have become trapped under? I would put money on it being a tooth issue. Will he let you brush them?

Alfie my Yorkshire Terrier has got the most disgusting breath you have ever smelt, he's 5yrs old now and I first mentioned it to my vet when he was only 12 weeks. He's had loads of tests to check his gastro tract, his liver, kidneys etc, he's had dentals which told us his teeth and gums are healthy, weve tried every product you can buy but all to no avail, he's a healthy little man with terrible breath and we just have to accept him that way, I've told him he'll never get a girlfriend, he doesn't seem too bothered

Allergies will cause bad breath. As long as they're healthy and no teeth problems, it's not a problem to worry about. I also feed raw and Midgie has bad breath once and a while. I know it's not her teeth cause she just had a dental and I brush her teeth. She has allergies and suffers with them.

Yes, he's had several loose teeth, one after another. I think all of his canines have come out and the adult teeth are well on their way in. He was without both top canines at once, and then both bottom canines. It got better this afternoon though. He's not rubbing his face as much as he was.

Ding, ding, ding!! I hadn't thought of allergies! I bet that's part of it too. He was sneezing last week, and rubbing his face and eyes a lot. His eyes were a bit watery too. I guess sinus drip does the same thing to dogs as it does people.

I suspected the teething more than anything. I'd rather not call the vet; the first thing they'll say is take him off of the raw diet. They just don't 'get it' and any random ailment will be blamed on the diet. I'm going to give his some time with the teething and see if it gets better.

Now that I'm really thinking about it, this didn't start until he started teething. Someone else mentioned allergies, and I think that too could be a contributor. Everyone in the family has been sinus-y and it's mostly summer cold-like stuff.
