Default Raw Diet Update

Bella has been on her raw diet for almost 6 months now and we couldn't be happier. She has no health issues, looks and smells great and is always full of energy...well, except when I try and take her on 3 mile power runs in the morning and evening. lol.

Anyways, I figured I would take a moment to share her diet and ever evolving eating preferences for those who are also into giving or contemplating giving raw diets to their Chi family members.

I've put an asterisk by her favorite foods, added notes on how she likes them prepared (if there is no designation, that means she just eats is thawed and raw) and categorized the foods by where I can find them. I'm in Atlanta, so I have a lot of options when it comes to finding fresh meat.

I use nutrition websites and the packaging labels to get the calorie count for all her food and I use that to calculate her calorie intake. She's big for a Chi weighing in at just under 8 lbs, and I have her on just under 400 calories a day. It's a bit more than the typical calorie counters suggest, but she looks super fit and has a very muscular build so I don't mind going over the recommended guidelines as I know every dog is unique. But I do keep her caloric intake to the 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% organ meat and 5% liver ratio.

Supermarket / Grocery Store:
Chicken legs
Chicken thighs
Chicken quarters
Chicken livers (frozen so the texture is firm)
Chicken backs
Chicken breasts
Cornish hens
Chicken wings
Chicken gizzards
*Ground chicken
Turkey wings
*Ground turkey
*Stew beef chunks
*Shredded beef (labeled as "beef for carne picada")
Ground beef / sirloin / round
*Beef chuck roast
Pork neckbones
Pork cutlets
Pork chunks for stew
Pork spareribs
Lamb ribs
*Sardines (packed in water)
*Salmon
*Veggie Paste (my homemade mix of minced spinach, red cabbage, carrots, celery, broccoli and whole eggs)
Apples
Strawberries
*Bananas
Bread (I don't give her this, but she sometimes snatches it out of the hands of the kids or off the table when she sees it -- don't judge me. lol)

Farmer's Market:
Chicken hearts
Chicken necks
Turkey necks
*Beef heart
*Beef liver (lightly seared)
*Beef kidneys
*Beef testicles
Beef tongue
*Bleached tripe (I know the stinky stuff is better, but I can only find it at the butcher)
*Pork Liver (lightly seared)
Pork kidneys (lightly seared)
Goat leg
Carp (fish)
Drum (fish)

Butcher Shop:
*Green tripe
*Sweetbreads

In general, the smellier the item, the more she seems to like it. Originally, she only seemed to like chicken and pork. But now, she gravitates towards organ meats and I have to coax her to eat chicken and pork.

Also, despite her small size, Bella thinks she can eat anything no matter how big it is. So I have to take away large bones from her like the goat legs because she tries her hardest to bite into it once she has stripped all the meat off.

I hope you all find this informative and useful.

Thanks for the great info. Apologies if I'm hijacking your thread, but I have a question/problem. I was going go at least partly raw but Piper can't handle liver in any quantity. Not only gives her the runs, but she exudes a livery odor. Even quality canned foods that contain liver cause it. Any thoughts, suggestions?

No worries. I think others here have a longer history with raw feeding than I do, but here's my take.

Liver definitely makes Bella's stools loose. After I finally got her to eat liver, I noticed her poop on liver days was exceptionally runny. To combat this, I started to spread out her liver allotment over the course of the week as opposed to giving her the whole serving on a single day. So now I give her liver 3 times a week. and when I do, I make sure it is always paired with one of her bony meals like chicken backs, legs, wings or lamb ribs. The bones seem to counter the effect of the liver in terms of stool consistency. Her stools are a bit looser than normal, but they are never runny anymore.

As far as odor, I can't help you there. I've never had an issue with how Bella smells after eating liver. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for how the liver, or kidneys or the green tripe smells when I pull it out for her to eat. The green tripe in particular is especially nauseating to me and I have to make sure the family isn't home whenever I pull it out. lol

Hope that helps.

Also, I forgot to mention that raw feeding doesn't have to be an expensive ordeal. Chicken quarters, backs, gizzards and thighs all sell for less than 1 $US per pound if they are on sale at the supermarket. And they always sell for that or less at the farmers market. Organ meat and liver is even cheaper -- we're talking between 50 and 89 cents a pound at the farmers market. While fish like carp, drum, smelt and sardines are super cheap there too. And as for tripe, my local butcher just gives it to me if i call ahead and tell him that I need some. I just give him a nice tip and all is good.

Things like lamb and cornish hen are obviously a bit more expensive, so she doesn't get that as much.

The only things that she gets on a regular basis that is a bit more pricey is the stew beef.
