Default Newbie to raw....

Hi everyone, sorry if you read posts like this all the time... Diesel has just started with raw. So far he has had a chicken leg in the morning of which he has gobbled up completely! I hope this is safe to eat the whole bone. Is it too much bone to have one a day? Also I bought some pork and beef frozen mince which I have divided into bags for each day for his evening meal with a little lump of lambs liver in. Trying to follow the 80, 10, 10 ratio here. I wasn't sure if frozen bagged mince was ok to give to him though? I will defrost it before he has it obviously. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The mince is fine. Some people don't like it because it has a greater surface area so better chance of contamination from pathogens like salmonella, but I wouldn't worry too much over that. If mince is easy to get for you and convenient, you can certainly use it in your rotation with raw whole pieces.

Be aware that too much variety too soon can cause loose stools. I'd recommend staying with chicken only for at least 1-2 weeks and then slowly adding in other meats, just one bite at a time. No reason to rush. Save the lambs liver for later when Diesel is fully acclimated to raw and eating well.

Chicken leg is fine but far too much bone. You can try deboning it and doing one meal of chicken leg with bone and one meal of just the meat. It's ok to be bone heavy in the beginning but you want to slowly start backing off the bone content and aim for just 10% of the diet being bone eventually.

Ah that's good then. Thank you for that I will keep him on the chicken for another week then add the mince. I just worry that the mince I bought is a cheap one but I guess compared to regular dog food this is still far better! I would buy him fresh meat if I could afford it but hubbys already having a fit that the dog gets more meat than him! Going to try find a local butcher too!

Good morning, Diesel has now started to walk away from his chicken breast and legs... He seems bored already and keeps trying to eat my kittens food....! I think I shall add some other meat in now and see how it goes. Is this normal for them to get bored so fast...?

If he is having normal stools, you can start to add in other meats, one protein at a time if you want. You could use the mince you have if you like. Just add a small amount, maybe a teaspoon, to the regular chicken and see how he does.

I wouldn't recommend a whole meal of a new protein all at once. Build up to it gradually. If he just eats the mince, you may have to dice up the chicken and mix them together. You can gradually decrease the chicken until he's eating the new protein by itself.

Keep in mind that the bones are important for calcium/phosphorus as well as keeping the stools firm. So you can bash them up with a hammer and mix in with your mince if he won't eat them.

Oh that's a good idea! He does seem to like chewing on the bone, it's just lately he has started to lose interest. I will try mixing and see what happens! Yes his poops have started getting quite small and hard... He hasn't seemed to have any bad reaction to the meat which is good. Hopefully he will start losing a little weight now!

Diesel update.... Two piles of diarrhoea on the carpet.... Obviously the new meat was a bit too much for him. Here is a very upset diesel.....
