Default I thought dogs were carnivores

Chili will eat fruits and veggies by the pound if you would let him.
I had to have a black cherry tree cut down in the back yard because he would eat the fallen fruit and they can be poisonious. He loves black berries and green bean and I dropped a peice of broccoli as big as his head once he grab it and hide till he had eaten it all. the next day he had a nice green poo but it was firm and looked fine.
Why would and animal crave foods that arent in there nature to eat? He has not been feed junk or sweets and he is only 8 months old?

They are indeed carnivores, but they can survive on an omnivorous diet. A carnivorous diet benefits them much better, but as scavengers in the wild, they have evolved to enjoy some omnivorous foods.

I bet Chili isn't actually craving fruits and vegetables, but he's just learned that food is good and he wants to eat it at any opportunity he gets! He probably figures if you're eating it then it must be good! I'm sure if there were two trees outside and one grew berries and the other grew beef steaks, he'd be tearing that beef tree down and devouring it before even thinking about those berries, lol.

I don't see how eating certain things makes a dog any less of a carnivore.. Humans are biologically Omnivores but people can choose to eat absolutely no meat. Does this make them biologically herbivores? Of course not.

Dogs are what we call opportunistic carnivores. Meaning they thrive on a high meat diet but CAN live on a low meat/high veggie, etc diet and will eat damn near anything they can get their mouths on.

Cats for example are obligate carnivores and must eat a high meat diet to live.

Ah, yes! I was going to say that humans can choose to be vegetarian or vegan and survive, but biologically were are supposed to be omnivores.

I have actually lived with and known some odd cats that would eat almost anything like a dog. My sister's cat LOVES pizza and if you leave a box of pizza on the table unattended, she will get inside the box and literally take bites out of it. She's eaten over half of a whole slice before, bread part and all. It looked like a little baby was munching on it, lol.

Lol how weird! My kitten is well... a kitten so he puts everything in his mouth. My Mom's cat on the other hand will eat NO human food except for meat and.... wait for it.... the powder cheese on white cheddar Cheez-It crackers

That's the great difference between cats and dogs though. Dogs can live off of garbage. Cats on the other hand absolutely need meat to live

Crazy as it is, I've seen people on cat forums say they want to feed their cat a vegetarian diet

I've heard that in the wild, dogs would get some fruits and veggies from their kill's stomach. That being said, Brewster LOVES blackberries! He picks them himself while we're walking and pulls toward the bush as soon as he smells them. He also likes most veggies and other fruits

I give mine a baby carrot or apple slice for a mid day snack. They take their time and chew up every single piece that comes off. Takes them about 20 mins to eat it. Of course I see carrot bits in their poop afterwards. Lol

This is actually a little bit of a myth. Wolves often leave the stomach and entrails behind, eating the rest of the kill, and when they do eat the stomach and entrails, they rip them open and shake them out, first, removing the majority of the semi-digested plant matter. So, in optimal conditions, wolves (and dogs) eat very little to no fruits and veggies.

However, apparently, my dogs never read the handbook. All of my dogs will eat fruits and veggies. My husky even went so far as to raid my tomato plants this summer! Carnivores, yes. But also, and foremost... opportunists!
