does anybody else have problems with matting?
Adam has a beautiful thick coat with big ear fringes, very fluffy trousers and a tail that curls over and almost touches the floor. I just wish he wouldnt matt so easily!!
It can happen in the space of a couple of hours....he goes away with neat and tidy fur and comes back with a massive matt on his ear!:foxes15: Alot of the time its so bad I cant brush it out and have to resort to pulling and slowly untangling it instead. At least he is a good boy and will lie quite happily on his back on my lap whilst I yank knots out!(even puts up with me knot pulling his trousers!!).
Is there anything I can do to reduce the knots??

Brush, brush and brush some more. Every day if you have to. In order to remove
dead hair and small tangles before they turn into mats. Keeping your pup's coat
clean, free of dirt and debris will also help. I groom daily, give fish oil as well and
never have problems with matting.

How does the overall quality of his coat look and feel? Matting is usually caused
by lack of grooming, sometimes it's from the dead hair, the dog scratching,
rolling/running around, not being brushed well enough prior to a bath, debris
such as twigs, leaves, etc. But it can also be a sign of a medical problem such
as fleas, allergies or skin conditions, which is why I ask how Adam's coat and
skin looks and feels. I know you say it is beautiful, but do you find he sheds a
lot? Is his skin dry or itchy? etc...

His coat feels silky for the most part and he is fed raw and oily fish which I think must help. His skin is also fine. It just seems that the texture by his ears and trousers is more fine and fuzzy.
The other day I brushed him really well and he came back less then 2 hours later with a 2cm matt on his ear! Surely that much hair didnt die in 2 hours??, why isnt he bald??LOL:D

*sigh* clearly I just have a freak of nature!

I have a couple long coat chis and the only one who matts sometimes is Sushi. But, daily brushing prevents it in her case. I keep their "but fluffies" trimmed so they're the same length as the rest of the body's coat.

There is a product called Show Sheen; that works incredibly for preventing matts and tangles (you brush it in after a bath) however, it's made for horses so a little goes a long way and you don't want it to end up greasy. A light mist is sufficient for my Chinese Cresteds, brushed through and keeps them tangle free.

My chi..Mr. Moose is prone to matting and knots around his ears, tail, and leg fringe to. He has a very long , thick double coat. Besides a once a month bath and full grooming which includes blow drying his fur and a leave in detangler and leave in conditioner. We also use a small "Furminator" comb on all of his fringe. It takes out all the dead and loose hair...plus it makes it very easy to take knots/mats out with out having to cut them. We do it every week. Last but not least we also give him salmon and eggs once a week for his coat.
It does take extra work to keep his fur smooth and nice but it is well worth it because is coat is gorgeous :)

Here are a couple of snaps so you can see what kind of fringe Mr. Moose has:

Getting nice and dirty:

My siggy also shows a nice pic of his ear fringe when his ears are up!

Does he scratch his ears much? Because honey does this and in about 3 seconds it causes a huge matt in them. If you watch when they do it, it kind of winds the hair in circles into a matt
No scratching but come to think of it all 3 of them playfight constantly and chomping on ears is a favourite game! The little monkies are probably knotting each others coats up arent they?
Adams ears arent quite as impressive as Moose though!! What a gorgeous coat!
