Anyone ever heard of this before?

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine. we were talking about dogs. well, she said that her dad told her that when a dog eats their own poop or another dog's poop, that means the dog has a mental problem or something wrong with their brain :?

i told her that sounds kinda weird. wouldn't a vet tell you something like that if you bring your dog in? has anyone else heard this theory? she swears up and down its true, but i'm skeptical about it.

I hope that's not true because Cooper's a poop eating machine!! But when you think of it.......if something eats it's own poo or another's poo, don't you think there's something wrong with their brain? lol

But on a serious note, I don't think I've ever heard that before. :?
Tader is a poop eater himself. Although I like to refer to him as "self cleaning" I read somewhere that a dog will eat its own poop if they are lacking a certain neutraint {sp?} in their diet I cant remember exactly when I read it but it was out of a Fosters & Smith pet catalog.

I've heard the same thing ... that they are lacking something. I think most dogs stop doing it after a while.
My Cooper will eat his if he is board, And my pug and newfoundland both went through poop eating stages and my monkey Boris is in his poop flinging stage so I guess all my animals have a mental problem  But I have never heard of that before i hope its not true! :)
i like i said, i'm skeptical of my friend's theory. she said if a puppy does it, its normal, but if an older dog, like 6 or older does it, they're considered to have something wrong with them. but who knows, maybe eating poo is normal and tastes good to dogs and they're trying to tell us something  (eeewww, just kidding, thats gross) i just wanted to know if any of you have ever heard of it before.

chico has never eaten his own poo, but when he was a pup i caught him in my cats litter box a couple times *gag* which is why the litter is now gated off. i personally don't think there is anytying wrong with them if they do it...it's nothing more than a bad habit, IMO. maybe dogs think the same thing when they see us eat certain foods? :?
nope, i don't buy it. some do it for the hel.l of it, some do it cause they lack nutrients, some because of worms, some because the foods nowadays are so packed with protiens and good stuff the body doesn't have time ti digest all of it so the poop resembles a food source, and others do it if they get in trouble for pooping in certain places that they shouldn't have gone.
No, I've never heard that, and just don't buy it. Think that is just another of those "old wives' tales" with no basis in facts.

Soon2bchiowner, you have a monkey? What kind? How about posting some pics in the general chat forum? I'd love to see it - when I was younger, I so wanted a monkey. I don't know why - just one of those things I guess. LOL
sounds like nonsense too me :D
yea, i figured she was wrong...lol.

My vet said ditto what luv4mgirls said.

I think we try to impose our human values and habits on our dogs sometimes. (I know I do.) We think they should like and dislike the same things we do.
It is not a mental problem and is very common in dogs ( and other animals for that matter ) It is a concern mainly because it is icky and can cause disease
Wild dogs instinctively eat their poop so that predators cannot track them. So some of our domesticated doggers still have that instinct them. :)
that means we have a lot of crazy chi's here :D

luv4mygirls said it perfect
