A few weeks ago I noticed a little dark spot on my little boy's snout. I thought he may have simply hurt himself while outside playing with his big brother, but it has since grown about 3x it's original size. Now I'm thinking it may not just be a scab. Has anyone seen something similar on their chi? Thanks for any input you may be able to give.

ps- Got a vet appt. for this afternoon to have it checked out.

It looks a little like a mast cell tumor I had on a ferret years ago. I'm glad you are going to the vet! Let us know what it is!

Just got back from the vet. He thinks it's just a scab from lil' Romeo hurting himself and prescribed some antibiotics and topical ointment. I'm going to keep a close eye on it and go back in a few weeks if it either doesn't get better or gets worse.

Oh yeah, it does feel hard like a scab, but the only thing really throwing me off is that there's fur on it. Maybe dog scabs have fur...I don't know. We'll see...

Some dogs do have 'furry' scabs. Basically, if they hurt themselves but the damage doesn't rub the fur off, the scab will form around the base of the hairs so it will look like the hairs are growing on the scab, through really they're poking up through it.

Well, I gave him his antibiotic and ointment before bed last night and when I woke up this morning and took him out of his crate this is what I found:

Apparently it was a scab after all. Whew!
