Are Chihuahuas good with children?

I'm new to this site, so I haven't read around a lot. Can I trust a Chihuahua with my four-year-old brother? My mother is partial to the idea, but I am so convinced that the dog I need is a Chihuahua. While I'm here- do they mind being dressed up? I mean, I'm not going to make her into a replica of Brusier or anything, but is a coat or sweater OK? WHta about carrying them around in a purse (one of those dog-suitable purses from PETCO)?

Thanks so much if you'll help!! :)

I have two children with my chihuahua (4.5 yr old and 2.5 yr old). Enzo was very skiddish of them at first and we've only had one accident where he got stepped on by my 4 yr old son.

But in the last two weeks, they have turned into great playmates. The kids have learned how to play with him (usually sitting on the floor and rolling balls). Enzo has learned to trust them and learned to stay out of the way while they are walking or running around. He has never shown any signs of aggression or aggravation towards them.

I think that if you get a puppy young enough (I got Enzo at 12 weeks) that it will get used to kids being around. But you will have to teach your brother how to handle the dog, and keep them supervised for the first few months that you get the dog. Better safe than sorry :)

Hope this helped,
Elizabeth

I have 2 children 4 and 5 who the dog has no proble with.I think it all depends if you get thepuppy young enpough to bond with them.

You also have to watch the youngsters handleing them until they know how safely..... Of course my 4 year old gives rides on the slide to my pups .... but have to say they seem to like it...LOLOLOLOL
I have 2 kids 8 and 6 and the chis are great around them and visa versa.
I think it is all in the teaching your kids how to behave around such a little creature.

as for the clothes it is nice to dress them up once in a while you need to get them used to it from the start, i just put a sweater on mine in the winter, as for the purse thing ..................... you need to remember that just cos they are small they are still dogs and love going walks i use mine just to sneak into places the rest of the time they love to walk
Mikey is great w/ my 2 boys. Their ages are 5 and a 1/2 and 7. I've taught them since they were little how to deal with and handle pets. As long as they realize the pet has feelings too and to be careful they should do great together. If you get your chihuahua as a puppy there should not be a problem.
