Ok, I have always had female dogs and was raised only with female dogs. About a week and a half ago I went to one of our chi adoption events to help out and to take the 3 pups I'm fostering. When I pulled up I saw another volunteer with our rescue holding a leash with not a chi but some kind of small dog. He weighs 10#'s and will be a yr old in a month. Anyways long story short I fell in love with him and decided to take him home that evening to see how he did with the girls. He is a good boy except for the occasional pottying and marking. Do belly bands really help correct this problem? We went to Petsmart a couple days after I brought him home and I was about to buy a belly band when I stopped to talk to a trainer regarding this problem. She said the belly band won't train him to stop. The only purpose it would serve is to keep him peeing or marking on furniture. She suggested we keep him on a leash at all time while in the house so if he decides to mark or potty I'll catch him instantly and I would be able to correct him. I guess I'm just asking for suggestions and help. I don't trust him to wonder the house like the girls and I think that is unfair to him but he can't be pottying and marking all over my house.

First time male dog owner!!!! AHHHH

We've had male dogs growing up. You first have to let him know that going in the house at all is unacceptable. Back to housetraining basics. So he can't have free run till he's reliable, just like a puppy. Also just have him relieve himself in a certain spot. He'll get it soon. Chica was housetrained after 2 months, but has recently(7months) sneaked into our guest room & left us little surprises. Now she isn't allowed upstairs unless we are with her.
Good Luck! KUDOS for rescuing!

Okay, A belly band is a piece of material that goes around his tummy and covers his winky dink and you put a sanitary pad in it. Usually velcros or has elastic. You can make them very simple out of fabric,Velcro, and A Sewing machine. We are going to make some very shortly for our males. Its almost impossible to stop a male from marking his territory especially with other dogs in the house. Or maybe its just my dogs

When I get them made i will post some pictures

First a belly band is a fabric belt like that you put pads in and wrap around his back body and penis so if he wets he will wet on himself. We are using one on Teeny, only because I can't get him to go potty outside. He has marked every corner and object in the house. He belongs to my grandaughter and is the sweetest little guy if we could just get him trained. I have tried but he just doesn't get it. He won't use potty paper or newspaper either. Rather then fighting with him I chose to obt out by using belly bands. This is the only dog I've ever had problems training. It seemsthat I am shampooing m house every month, I'm a clean freak, as my daughter tells me, so he is a lot of work. If he wasn't such a swetheart it would be different. ha ha, we really do love him.
