Hi all!
I haven't posted here in a while, but just wanted to say hello and check in by saying chaplin is doing well, but is about to drive me INSANE!

Oh, first I wanted to post and say an update about the last post I made regarding chaplin shedding so much.
Anyway, I have switched his food and started to make brushing him a routine and it has helped!

Ok. so on to my neww problem.
Chaplin has always done very well with going potty on the pad, as I live on second floor condo.

However, he still tries to mark things, especially certain items in the house and it is driving me crazy..I just cannot get him to stop.
Someone had mentioned that I should put a belly band on him while I am at home and he is not needing to go out and actually potty.

Anyone have experience with these bands. DO they really work?
If so, where is the best place to buy ones that will actually last?!

Thanks everyone!

Hi All, sorry it has taken me a while to respond.
No he is not fixed.
A lot of people have mixed feelings about that issue. Some say that if the male is neutered he will not mark, while some others say that this doesn't ensure not marking.
I just am at a loss of what to do.
I can't have my furniture and carpet ruined.

I personally say neuter him. I can't say if it will solve the issue, but it may. There are so many health benefits too. One myth is that it will change your dogs character, this does NOT happen, though he shouldn't be so horny!!

lol thanks!
He is such a LOVER! He has the sweetest personality and is not really aggressive at all!
He doesn't bark (EVER), and doesn't jump on furniture.
So... I was thinking oh my gosh what if it does change his personality, but I am sure that is a myth.
He's pretty healthy at about 7.5 lbs and solid build.
What health benefits are there with neutering? I know I read about lowering risk of types of cancer.

Just to name a few;
enlargement of the prostate gland, infection of the prostate gland and cancer of the prostate gland.
lower risk of developing perineal hernias.
decreases the risk of testicular cancers.

Another neutering myth is that the dog will become fat and lazy...Again, this is not true.
The only time your dog will get a bit lazy after castration will be immediately after the operation because he will be groggy from the meds and a little sore down there.

I have used belly bands on my dog Mojo, who is a Bulldog Mix. They seem to work well. Prior to him being neutered he tried to mark everything - including my female Chihuahua, Ote. It was crazy! We had our couch, pillows, the dog toys, dog beds - EVERYTHING - peed on. Not a lot, just a drip or two, but still. He was 100% potty trained, uses the potty bells, yet still peed - so I knew he was marking. Belly bands were a LIFE SAVER. He has a small waist, so I ended up having the belly bands custom made (by the same person who made my Ote dog diapers) and they were the best decision ever!! Saved so much furniture from being marked yet again.

He was neutered about two weeks ago - his personality has not changed at all. BUT so far, the marking behavior has disappeared. Of course, this is only two weeks after the procedure, but hopefully it's gone for good!!

I'd say DEFINITELY invest in belly bands. I had 10 - one for each day of the week plus some.

I have a Chi mix and a Chi one is fixed the other not and they both mark.

Charlie the unfixed one pees when he has his belly band on, so I have to put a tiny pad in it.

Hi Ozziegirl, a belly band is.. well exactly what it sounds like, here is a link to one site in the UK so you can see them.

They are great.

Will those belly bands fit a 4 lb dog my Papillion is fixed but he still will mark at times if there is a strange dog in the house or he sees a dog in the yard. I never heard of belly bands till I came to this site. Wonderful I guess you could easily make your own with a some nice flannel or some other soft material and just put a pad in it and some Velcro strips on it. For a couple dollars worth of material and Velcro you could make a new one for every day of the week

Toby was just starting to mark when we got him neutered. He hasn't marked since, and he got neutered 5/1. That's pretty good for a dog that was marking at least three times a week before. He was six months old when he has surgery.
