Our first dog was a Boxer and she is almost 9 years old. She's a stubborn girl but so intelligent, it blows my mind sometimes. Unfortunately she is extremely dominant and because she wasn't properly socialized as a pup, she doesn't mesh well with other dogs - particularly in her space.

Recently, my husband and I were discussing the possibility of getting another dog but were unsure of what kind of dog, how old, if it would work etc. but we knew that the next dog we owned would have to be named Manolo. And then it struck me! A Chihuahua! Named Manolo! Perfect!

So a few days later I was driving to my mother's house when I saw this jet black little dog strutting along the sidewalk... I stopped and rolled down the windows and made eye contact and immediately a connection. Although there were no tags, it was a private community of homes and so often I've seen people just let their dogs out the front door to come home when they pleased. Nothing I would ever do but...anyway....I thought to myself, "man this could be my dog! I didn't know if it was a boy or girl but nonetheless, it's name...Manolo.

So I asked my mom if she knew who's dog it was because it was on her street and she said that she had no idea and that it had just showed up a couple days before and had been roaming around. I thought about it hard and decided against it because my Boxer, my husband, I didn't think a stray was going to go over well with either...so I went home by myself.

The next morning I could not stop thinking about it and finally said to myself, I would go after work to the same area and if I find him, it was meant to be. So I drove through the neighborhood and couldn't find him and just when the disappointment set it...there he was. With his sweet swagger coming head on towards me over the horizon...my little guy.

I brought him home. My Boxer accepted him almost immediately and now she let's him drink from her water bowl first. :)

It was just meant to be...

Thank you both! To be honest, I always had a preference for big dogs but this little guy changed my whole perception of Chihuahua's and quite frankly, they are one of the greatest dogs to have. I love my Boxer tremendously although she was my husbands dog just before we met so Manolo is truly MY first dog and I have never known love like this before. My only problem now is that I want more!! So many more! :)

He is a sweetheart. Beautiful coloring.

When you got him, did you have him scanned for a chip or put up any signs or post a craigslist ad? I hope that no one has been sad that their baby is missing. Our boy was wonderful and could be let out to potty and would come right back to the porch and bark just once to be let in. He would have bitten someone (he was grumpy!) who tried to pick him up but it just made me wonder if you tried to find his owner before adopting him.

Thank you!

Yes indeed...if the tables had been turned I would have wished for the same. I put fliers up, checked for chip, etc but after a good month of no responses I figured he was let loose purposely in hopes of someone taking him in...this has happened on many other occasions in this same neighborhood. Sad really because there are so many other ways to surrender an animal if you can't care for it anymore...people are just so irresponsible about it. Very very sad.

That's a lovely story. I would not have been able to sleep with a little chi roaming around on his own. He looks so cute. We have just got our first ever puppy. We are besotted. We would also like another. I notice a lot of people on this forum have more than one. Is there a reason for this. We rarely leave Sparky alone and we have cats so he has plenty of company. But I would quite like another. Just need a good excuse to plead for another!

Yes! Me too! They are so little and vulnerbale and I'm so glad I did because when I finally got close enough to get him he was very thin, spine and hip bones were very prominent...still a tough guy but not as healthy he deserved to be.

You can't just have one! If I didn't have my big dog I would have more than one, no doubt about it! I just think we got lucky with her bringing him home and not convinced I'd have the same luck if I tried again.

They are just soo cute and bring so much love to a home...why not ;)

I hope you decide to do it!
