Hi everybody,

We've a 9 week old puppy, Pavelka and last night it turned out that he has hypoglycemia after he had his first serious shock. We had to took him to the emergency vet around 3 in the morning to basically point out what could have caused the shock.

Of course, before I took him home I've read forums, books, articles to make sure I'm prepared enough to be his guardian angel. I've read about honey directly to the gum (in case the jaws are locked), kayro syrup or sugar to the water, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, etc.

I know the best way to prevent it is to have his feeding strictly scheduled, 4-5 little meals per day (like the ripping period for the body builders :p) but as you're experienced chihuahua owners I'd like to ask for your suggestion.

What would you do to avoid blood sugar dropping down, how would you do, what product will you add?

I would prefer suggestions from owner who have successfully dealt with this already.

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
Milan

One of my dogs had a problem with this and we used kayro syrup, but honey or maple syrup is fine too. It may be in your best interest to keep food down for your pup until he is a bit older. Then 4 meals a day til 6 months. And then twice per day. Btw welcome to the forum. And we would love to see pics of the little guy.

Thanks for the warm welcome! :) I've uploaded a couple of pictures to my album and made them public. Enjoy. :)

Keep the food down for him? What do you mean? To give him smaller portions or give them less? As I've learned at this stage of their life they require food at least 4-5 hours, which means at least 4 times per day.

I think I will go along with the Kayro syrup and will put a tiny amount into his water.

Thanks. :)

I'm the same I have a strict meal plan for my two and always have honey in my cupboard incase, I do though agree with Meoshia I would keep some food down for the little guy chihuahuas burn off their grub fast so its always good to keep them topped up with snacks and treats!

Heres a good wee read for ya too, How to prevent Hypoglycemia in tiny puppies. I know its mostly focusing on Yorkies but its good for toy breeds in general.

I hope he's feeling better and welcome to CP :)

Yep, other than a regular feeding schedule having some corn syrup or honey on hand is the best practice.

I have never had a baby Chi but I did have an insulin-dependent diabetic Miniature Pinscher. Hypoglycemia is a very real, and life-threatening, ordeal for diabetics. I used to keep a packet of those McDonald's (or other fast food type place) honey or syrup in both my glove box of the car and one in my purse so I had it ready when we needed it and were out.

IF you do not have any other dogs, then leave kibble out most of the time. Put down a meal 4-5 times a day. Certainly at night. They tend to improve with age. What did the vet recommend? Any syrup or Nutri-Cal is easy to use. My puppies HATED the taste of Nutri-Cal, but it works great. I have Iris Pens for my dogs, and that way the other dogs could not get at the food. This period should only last for a couple of months, hopefully.

With tiny puppies regular meals are crucial, eating a little even as often as every 2 hours may be necessary. Also don't allow the pup to get chilled, stressed or over-tired. With a lively pup, it is important that you schedule in regular naps too.

Thanks everybody for the messages. What I did is to keep food down for him non-stop as he is my only doggy at home. Also, honey proved to be an instant solution when the hypoglycema striked at him.

The mistake we did 2 weeks ago is that we've tried different dog foods to make sure he eats enough. After that it took us many days to get him back to his previous dry food (usually add some water to it to make it a bit softer) and now everything is absolutely alright.

I set an alarm to wake up around 2-3AM and to check him if he is alright also to give him some snack to make sure his blood sugar level remains on a decent level.

Oh is he a cutie, he looks like my Max, who is now 8 years old... But he looked like him as a puppy!!

I always keep NutriCal Puppy on hand when I have babies in the house.
Yep, a really Irish pattern. :)

I've read about NutriCal too but as long as honey works perfectly (and Pavelka likes it pretty much) I think I'll stick with it.
