I was thinking about buying my 9 month old Chihuahua a carrier, but I am not sure if I need to or not. what are the advantages and disadvantages about them???

I don't feel safe walking her on the street because, the neighbours dog who is 5 or 6 times her size always comes running out, and she's so tiny and frail I don't want anything to happen to her.

I guess its like a mother with a child

Any thoughts????

Well.....if you like to take her out alot, a carrier is nice if she poops out walking. They do tire faster than a big dog. Try something inexpensive at first to seee if she enjoys it. If soo, you can always find one really fun for her, or two, or three like dexters mom ;) hee heee!!!!

I have one for daisy... but she's not allowed out as such yet so am using it for socialising purposes.. Will also use it to take her shopping with me so she can come into the shops undetected!! You could use it to get past the neighbours dog so shes can walk for a bit after!!

I got one for Darla, it was great for when she hadnt had all her shots so i could still take her places.
I still use it now and then, but mainly walk her.
Havent tried sneeking her in any shops, since i would always have Daisy with me and she would be walking anyway, lol

I personally think crriers are brilliant. theyre only little so dont need alot of excercise, so with a carrier they dont have to walk all the time, also you can take them into any shop with no problems. I recommend carriers. mine have the whole house and garden to run around and excercis ein wheneer they want x

I have many carriers, including a backpack and stroller. With them being smaller I like to have carriers when there are a crowd of people as they can get stepped on. Also good for when you run in somewhere and your not sure they allow dogs. I like them for the reasons you gave as well...they can come in handy when you are not sure about strange dogs or people for that matter, LOL!

Just make sure she get plenty of exercise at home, or when you are out and about let her do some walking ;-)

Thanks for the advice. I think that I will try one and see what happens. I usually let her walk, but you never know. I've had close calls with a few big dogs. People don't listen and keep their dogs on a leash..LOL..

Is it too late to get her use to it, or can I still get her into the habbit of going in a carrier???

Bribe her with treats!!! I know Daisy is only a puppy but she tries to dig her way out for the first few minutes then realises their are treats in their, i did it slowly too. Get one where you have a small lead you can attach first of all so you can leave it a little open and she won't jump out!!!

I take Bella with me EVERYWHERE! The mall or anywhere I need to go. Number one, I think it's good for socializing, and number two, I don't think she is "supposed" to be taken to those places, but when she is in her carrier, it's less obvious:) Hehe..

I do think that they should still be taken on walks for exercise, and carriers are great for when they get tired or you wanna take them with you places:)

I have two for Bella..ones a Vera Bradley bag that's great for taking her from one location to another, and the other is a Emre bad which looks like a purse, so I use it when I go shopping:)

I personally like the idea of carriers. I think they are great for walks if your chi gets tired or if the weather is extremly cold. Great for taking shopping or places that doesn't allow dogs, and also somewhere safe for them to travel in, in a car if you don't have a car harness or car seat x

I have three dogs with very differing energy levels - Biggles could run a full marathon, Bruno can walk for ages and Poppy only a bit - we often go for very long beach and forest walks - so I find the carrier (I have one of Ivysmom's carriers) brilliant, whoever is tired, either Bruno or Poppy can pop in!
