Just wondering if changes in appetite is normal for pups? Peanut is 4 months old. The last week and a half, his appetite was poor. He stopped eating as much as he normally would. I measure each feeding, so I know pretty well what he eats during a 24-hour period. His intake was cut by more than half. Now the last couple of days, he's wolfing down food like nobody's business. Is this normal? I was beginning to think last week that maybe it was time to cut down his feedings to twice per day, instead of 3, but now he eats like he's starving every time I feed him.

My Bailey is the same, he is 19 weeks now, sometimes he wolfs his food down and others he sniffs and walks away and just eats a little at a time. I am not sure if this is normal but I guess it is.

I would say that as long as they are eating then they are fine. Puppies can be really energetic one day and not so much the next, when they are more energetic then they will burn off more food and will be hungrier ;-) I would continue to feed 3 times a day at least until 6 months of age. After that if they stop eating as much then I think it would be okay to remove the middle of the day feeding ;-)

Well, I stopped feeding Jazz 3X a day before she was 6 months....3 or 4 months maybe, and she's done just fine. Her interest for that midday meal had dropped a bit, so I took that as my cue that it was time to cut it back.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a dog's appetite fluctuating somewhat. Mine does. I'm sure yours does too. I think changes from day to day are normal. What you're looking for is enough consistency of change to form a pattern.

I try and look at it like this: Over a period of a week to 10 days, are my dogs getting what they need, and are they eating their required amount of food....more or less? Day to day, it may go up or down, but over a longer period, is it averaging out? If that's the case, and most always it is, then I just leave it alone, chalking it up to normal fluctuations. As Jazz is still growing, and over time has required a bit more food, just not as often, when she started cleaning her bowl and seemed to be frantically looking for more, and that behavior continued for a week or so, I upped her portion marginally, because it was obvious from that consistent behavior that she required more. She's always done that though, from time to time, so I needed to observe for long enough to ensure that it wasn't just random and erratic, but in fact a pattern of behavior.

And I think that's perhaps what you might want to observe to draw any kind of conclusion.......an actual pattern, not just the daily fluctuations.

Well, I had noticed lately that Bella was not eating well, so with her size I have gotten worried. She was eating her canned food fine, but not the dry food. Two days ago, she was going nuts and doing something weird with her mouth..sure enough, a tooth came flying out and she is back to eating like normal..Perhaps he is cutting teeth or the are in the process of falling out?? Or maybe he is just not liking his dog food? Good luck with everything and I wish you the best!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I haven't seen any teeth come out since we've had him, so I don't know. He didn't eat as much a couple of days this week, but he's back to scarfing it down again. I'm just continuing with feeding as I usually would and keeping a check on how much he's eating overall, like Tink's mom said.
