Chi in heat, now what?

 Yesterday morning I woke up to a bloody mess in our bed and it was Tasha! She is 7 months old. We got her at 5 months. Don't know much about dogs in heat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And how do I keep bloody spots from getting all over the house? A Supervisor at work told me I was in for about 6 weeks of hell. Is this true? Help!

The length of time is different for all dogs and how much they spot also. You can fashion her some panties out of socks or baby undies and put a panty liner on the inside. Larger dogs can usually wear diapers with a hole cut for the tail but you'll have to be creative for a chihuahua. Maybe you can check around and find diapers for premature/tiny babies you could use. Other then that put towels anywhere she may sit and just wait it out :)
Thanks! :) Socks what a great idea! I'll give it a try.
there are also doggy diapers you can buy from petsmart....
Chiquita wears regular walmart brand newborn diapers when she is in heat.
Glad i have a lad! lol!
lol me too faye

How about spaying your baby, to avoid this problem again , basically it is brill as stops certain types of cancer if done before first heat 0% chance of getting certain types of cancer but with ever7y heat this chance increases so I would definately book her in too be spayed once her heat is over
My daughter breeds mini doxies. When one is in heat, she uses a type of panty she gets at Petsmart, with a replaceable liner. It fastens with velcro, and is easy to get on and off and is cut so they can poop without taking it off. You do have to take it off for them to urinate. Rather than buy the liners at the pet store, she uses regular panty liners from Walmart. They work just as well, and are a lot cheaper.

Normal cycle is 2 - 3 weeks I believe. Never heard of it lasting as long as 6 weeks.
Wow, thanks so much for all the advice. But doesn't the diaper make her mad and try to chew it off?

That's the reason she uses the panty with velcro. It's a heavy duty fabric with elastic around the leg area, and very difficult for them to get off. They are a little expensive - think they run around $10 - $15 depending on size. She bought one, and I used it to make a pattern and sewed a couple more for her. You really need at least two pair of the panties. They are washable.

She tried the diapers once, but her dog ripped them off and made a real mess. Just depends on the dog I guess.

Are you planning on having your female spayed? Unless you are planning to breed, I highly recommend it. Not only will you not have to worry with the mess again, but it is extremely beneficial healthwise for your chi. Much less chances of some types of cancer.
Yes, I'm thinking it seems best to have her spayed. :( I kinda wanted to have her breed so I could have another little Chi but with all the fanfair I keep hearing about health issues, pregnacy problems and the such I'm leaning to the spaying. I do want to keep her around for a very long time! Oh how I love her! :angel11:
