Well, I need some opinions here guys...
My little guy is four months old now, and he's developed taste buds like his mother. She loved any sort of human food you would give her. Bananas, carrots(cooked), apples, oranges, plain crackers, hard boiled eggs diced up, just about anything I deem healthy enough to give him. And, I'll add also he doesn't have a weak stomach. None of this stuff hurts his tummy, he doesn't throw up after he eats or anything. His stools are perfectly normal, and he gets free choice of his puppy food too. But, he just is getting to fat. At least he seems like it. I know puppies generally are supposed to have a little fat, but what about Chis'. I always thought they were supposed to look kind of slim. But, he's my first, and I'm just not sure.
His mother and father were both 8 pounds at full grown, and my little guy weighs about 4 and a half at 4 months, I've kept in touch with one of the people that bought one of his sisters, and she weighs about 4 pounds...

Anyway, I'm just rambling now, if I could post a picture I would, but it's not possible right now...is there any way I can tell if he's getting too chubby...I don't want to cause him to have any health problems in the future..

Thanks ahead of time everyone...Dannie

P.S. I'm a worry wart I know :-D But, he's my baby, and I'm sure you all know exactly what I mean about that... ;)

Your vet should be able to tell you if he's a healthy weight, it's really impossible to tell over a computer without a picture, and really weight doesn't tell you much. Next time you go for a checkup ask the vet if they think his weight is healthy. Too much human food isn't good though, chis have really small stomachs, they aren't supposed to eat a whole lot.

At one time I thought Boop was too skinny, but the vet said she was just right. Boop has filled out since then and I think she may be putting on too much weight. When I look at her from above, her waist is there, but is not as defined as before. Her ribs are not as easy to feel as before, either. You should be able to feel, not see them.

Anyway, those are my criteria - the view from above and feeling ribs.

since it also depends sooo much on a chihuahuas build, a well bred chihuahua should be dainty but also shorter than it is long and have a slighly wide chest (kinda stocky)

generally you should be abe to feel the ribs but not see them, same with the spine, when you run your hand down the dogs back you should be able to feel the bumps under the skin but not see them. from above their should be a clearly defined "waist" but the tummy should be smooth and not tucked in (like when you take a deep breath and pully your tummy in so it almost tucks in and under the ribcage.).

next time puppy is at the vets ask the vets opinion on his weight.
with his parents both being so big it wouldnt suprise me if hes got a stockier build in general, at 4.5 lbs at 4 months hes probably going ot be around the 5-6lb range full grown.

but it is VERY difficult to tell without seeing a picture and feeling the dog, if the pups got a slimmer build (long legs narrow chest) he will look different than a chi with a deeper chested build.

What about a long coat chihuahua? Murray's waist is not visible at all to me and he waddles and snorts a lot now when he walks. He always feels very heavy when I pick him up, but he's been eating the sameway for years. I thought maybe it was just his coat growing more, but he waddles...and snorts a lot!

If your baby is around the same weight as his parents, and if the vet hasn't said anything, I wouldn't worry about it. Like you said, if you can feel the rib bones, I'm sure he's fine.

In my opinion & again this is just my opinion & I'm not an expert so noone jump on me ;) I don't think at 4 months he would be fat he's still growing. Mia's a big girl she's not fat just big she feels alot more heavy than Bella or Poco. Ask you vet next time you go about it but don't think becuase he weighs a certain amount he's fat. People get far too wrapped in the weight of their chis.

mylo is around 10-11lbs he doesnt look fat atall and you can feel his spine and ribs wen u stroke him and pick him up. Wen i got mylo i got him at 12weeks and he had very short legs and looked chucky i was thinkin wen i got him omg hes a chubby little man but he has filled out fine, hes perfect weight for his size. so i wouldnt worry either.
