When you trained your chi to go to laying down position, how did you do it?

PS Has anyone noticed how stubborn our babies can get even after training?

With Angel, I got her to sit. With a treat in hand, I put it to her nose and slowly lowered my hand to the floor. The first couple of times I had to guide her downward with my other hand on her shoulders but it didn't take long for her to get the hint.

She knows what down means but is not always quick to do it on command so we are still working on it a little.

he he i thought you meant down as in "get down" i was gonna say.. there usually isn't a problem with chi's getting into things up high.. hehe.. unles you have a super duper jumping chi.. lol

That's how I did it. When we start playing command games, he gets so excited he sits, lays, and circles all with one command..."sit". Now I have to get him to understand to do each one individually.

I've not started any command training with Josie yet, but I know I need to. I've only now gotten her to recognize her name. She knows what "No!" means, though.

On average, how difficult is it to teach Chis? I've read that they can be pretty stubborn.

Down was the hardest for me and Ruby until a girl at a local park told me to try having Ruby SIT first, then give the command DOWN several times while *I* pulled (slowly) her front feet forward until she was laying in the down position...then lots of praise and a treat. It took us about 30 or so repititions over five or six days and she got it. Ruby is only about four months old, and I am really proud that I have trained her to sit, paw, and down. Now she can go straight to down without me having her sit first. Here is a picture of her I took yesterday in the "down" position.

PS the girl at the park was only ten years old and said she saw this training tip on Animal Planet. :wave:

To train down, I did what was said above...have a treat in your hand and as you say "Down" bring the treat slowly to the floor and then either go around to the side so the Chi lies on their side or else bring the food out further in front of them so they need to lay down to reach it.

I have had great luck training both of my Chi's...the hardest part is just being firm and consistent with them! Good luck!

after reading this thread i too tried the method above "lower the treat and push gently on shoulders" and it worked! it only took bobo less than 30 mins to get the hint. im so excited!

the treat i used helped a whole lot too.....im using "solid gold tiny tots"
bobo seems to reeeeaaaallyyyyy love it. hope this helps.
