Hello!!

So I have noticed my little Jax has a build up of tartar on his back teeth. I do not brush his teeth- I know bad, but he won't really let that happen! Have any of you had success with the bones or other dental care out there?? If so could you suggest some? Or any other suggestions that you think could work for us? Thanks!!
xoxo

Raw bones work great for tartar. Usually not recommended for larger dogs, I think the small marrow bones (soup bones) are fine for small dogs. Larger dogs can break teeth on them because they are so hard, but I haven't heard of that happening to a small dog. You can find them in the meat dept at your grocery store. I usually scoop out most/all of the white marrow in the middle because it's so fatty and can cause loose stools. But I leave the meat on them and let Brody chew away. He loves them and can work on one for hours at a time. His teeth are pearly white with no tartar at all. Make sure you get ones that are too big for him to try and swallow.

You can also use bully sticks, although they are softer.

There's a gel you can apply and then brush off. Petzlife maybe? But if he is not used to tooth brushing, this might not be successful.

I would warn you away from the greenies and dental type treats. They are mostly starch and I don't think they are effective. Greenies have been reformulated but they caused some dog deaths by intestinal obstruction so I am wary of them.

If Jax will let you, you can also try to crack the tartar off with your thumbnail. Most dogs don't like you messing in their mouths, but I used to scale my standard poodles teeth myself and she never had a dental and she had perfect white teeth with NO tartar clear into her teens.

I know off the top of my head bully sticks are supposed to help clean teeth. Almost everyone has dental treats now. like Pedigee breath busters, Dingo dental chews, Greenies, and Bright Bites (they're cinnamon flavored stars). Venus will let me brush her teeth cuz she knows she gets lots of lovin' afterwards, but Jack refuses. As soon as he sees me take out the toothbrush, he lays in the corner and shakes and pees himself, then scoots across the floor and hides wherever he can. I only tried to brush his teeth once, and I let him just lick the toothpaste a bit, and just did one little sweep inside his mouth, but apparently he really didn't like it...

How does that work? Do you spray it on their teeth, trying to hit all of them? Maybe I could pin Jack down long enough to try that out.. lol

lol im not sure how it works. i always end up spraying on the same side, hmm! i've pinned down dexter about 20 times until he finally gave in since he knew it wasn't THAT bad, i mean afterall, the mouth smells minty! :hello1:\

if you cant that do the spraying, he was always great with this one. it's a brush which they chew for 2 mins, yup 2 mins is all it takes! ;) i haven't done it for a while though...lazy me LOL

I bought the odorless bully sticks from bestbullysticks.com and they are pretty odorless! Still have a little bit of a smell, but not bad. Very tolerable. So you could check those out!

There are gels and sprays that have an enzyme that help with preventing tartar build up and with continued used supposed to even break it down.

Petzlife and Fourpaws both make them..spray and gel.

Rico gets his brushed--if he wants it or not..
