heres a question... when nate was younger, he was on cosequin for collapsing trachea. he is now close to a year old and doesn't seem to have any problems at this point. i have always used a harness on him because of the trachea issue but am wondering if i need to continue with the harness or if it would be safe to use a collar.... any advice?

continue to use a harness, on ANY dog under 10lbs a harness is safer (trechea problems or not) on a toy breeds neck!
i NEVER suggest walking on a collar for anything under 10lbs, a harness is the way to go.
ESPECIALLY with a dog that has already had treachea problems.
it would be safe to let him wear a collar with his tags on, but NEVER walk him on a collar!

I tried using a collar only for tags, but it was too tempting too many times to clip her lead to the collar instead of putting on a harness, and now and then she'd tug and start making that choking sound. I gave up using a collar at all to manage my own behavior, LOL.

She never goes outside without a leash, so the collar was very, very tempting. I didn't get the back yard sealed up, and then a windstorm took down a section of fence. It will be a while yet before it gets replaced.

I woudn't risk it on these little ones. Chis usually have very slender necks, so I really wouldn't take the risk. Plus, they have all kinds of harnesses out there. If possible, I wouldn't use a collar. Also, I have heard of many stories where the harness was a life saving device because in one case, a big dog leaped out of nowhere and attacked a chi that was being walked on a harness, and the owner just snatched it up. If the chi had been on a collar, it would've choked to death. Like foxywench said, collars would be okay for dog tags, but not to walk.

Hmm...never would have thought of that Kimmie. Sounds plausable though. Good point! :)

i have asked quite a few vets and trainers at my dog training club and they all say it is fine to use a collar on a Chihuahua - i have heard just as many arguments against harnesses because they put a lot of pressure on the dogs front and shoulders and can cause curvature of their backs

really ur chi should be well trained enough so they walk properly (ie not pulling on the lead) so whether they wear a collar or a harness it does them no damage

I used a harness when Twig was a puppy but now shes grown up and walks to heel i use a collar as she is much more comfortable in it than the harness
