I am concerned about our one year old chi (Gus). We just lost his best friend and our family dog (Ratchet, lab/akita mix)of 8 years to cancer. Since we brought home Gus at 9weeks old, him and the older dog have been best buddies. It has only been 3 days since Ratchet lost his fight with cancer but Gus is lost without him. We work during the day so when we get home Gus never leaves our side and seems sad. He will play but not like he use to when Ratchet was alive. My question is: do Chihuahua's need that companionship of another animal or are they okay as a only animal with a family. Just wondering.

I'm so sorry for your loss,i suppose if they're used to having a friend they will always miss them,i have 3 dogs and a cat and they all play together and my older Chi always takes care of the young one,so in this house if one wasn't here yes they would be unhappy

Sorry for the loss of your Rachet. I just lost my pekingese, Ling Ling, to cancer two months ago. I know when Ling Ling lost her sister, she grieved so bad, I thought she may follow her. She stopped eating or playing and just laid in the spot where Sun Chee died. When I started rescuing chis, she got a new lease on life and regained her happy clownish ways and just loved them. Most the time. lol Maybe another chi could help him be happy again. They love to be with other chis. Since you work, maybe an older rescue would be a good match. Again, sorry and welcome to chi people.
