Hi Guys

am a bit worried about Ozzy as he has been coughing all day , well about 10 times so far today just like 2 hacking coughs a bit like if he is going to be sick and then it stops, it is very weird just wondering if maybe he has eaten something out the garden and its stuck in his throat, I cant see anything. Lily has got to go and get a wound check tomorrow if it hasnt stopped by tomorrow do you think i should ring the vets and see if he could come at the same time too, has anybody else had this :?: he seems a bit quieter than normal too , but only a bit still running and jumping around and eating and drinking ok

Chihuahuas are known for doing this thing like a reverse cough, which makes a hacking-gasping sound. This is perfectly normal I have heard and you can subside the cough by massaging thier throat for a few seconds.
right thanks i will try it, he does this when he walks on a collar but this is different more like a human cough :)
Zeus does the same thing, kind of like a reverse sneeze. I read it's because Chi's are small dogs. One way to stop this is like TheNashGang said, massage the throat, or encourage them to lick or drink some water.
Most small dogs do the reverse sneeze thing (a wheezing, snorting sound). If he's really coughing you should get him checked out. It may be an upper respiratory infection or kennel cough.
yeah it is definately like a proper cough rather than the reverse sneeze as he does this too so they are very different, thanks so much guys for the help :love2:
If he chews on sticks etc. while out side he could have a splinter or scratch in his throat.
My Rottie had this happen to him. My Vet put him on antibiotics and some cough medicine.
he is always chewing on wood in the garden as we have that bark chip around , it doesnt seem bad today he has only coughed once so do you think I should book him in or just mention it to the vet when I take lily in
Can you call the vets office and explain to them what he is doing?
That's what I would do. Let them decide if they think it is serious enough for them to see him or for you to just keep an eye on him.
thank you i will do
well when I took Lily to the vet she suggested that when I take Lily in a week on thirsday for her final wound check to bring him along as it can be caused by many things...............kennel cough, heart failure     , I hope it is nothing that serious she said as it has stopped today to just watch him but if it starts again to bring him in before then, so I was quite happy about this as surely she would of wanted to see him sooner if it was anything serious..................so please say ytour prayers for my little guy
You are in our prayers for sure!
I'm sure it is nothing serious since it isn't a constant thing. Probably just got something caught in his throat and it is gone now.
After all you just got Lilly Boo, they haven't had near enough time to play together yet. :D
We have a joke at my house.
All pets must read the manual about living with us. The #1 rule is YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GET SICK!
LOL
Don't worry yourself crazy over it. It's probably nothing. Summer has begun, so maybe the weather has given him alittle scratch in the throat. Ozzy will be in my thoughts and prayers.. and DON'T worry. :)
thanks so much it means alot :)
