Are the steps you take to create train an adult chi (almost 3 years old) any different than training another kind of dog or a puppy? My lil guy will stay in without hassle if I put him into a crate but he gives me the puppy dog eyes so I don't think he's crazy about it. I have a comfy mat in there, snacks and water so he's got what he needs and he sleeps a lot anyway. I have the crate with the door opened right now in my room so he can go in if he wants to

Yes it's the same, he might even learn quicker then a puppy!
Starting out with getting him used to the crate at first open is a good idea. Then after he sits in the crate comfortably for a few seconds close the door. If he cries do NOT open it, don't open it unless he is calm and quiet.
I really wouldn't leave food or water in the crate... the more he eats or drinks the more he will need to go poo and pee!! Take his food and water away about 3 hours before you go to bed!
Good luck!

the lil guy is making the saddest sounds, how can I make it a positive experience and have him not think its a bad thing if he's whining. Whenever I do something he doesn't like he starts thinking it's a punishment, puts his head down in shame and tucks his tail between his legs

Try putting a treat in the crate before closing the door. Put his fav toy in there as well. make sure that you give that positive association to the crate :) Good luck! I was able to crate train a 1 year old chi that I got so I'm sure a 3 yo can learn too

The big problem is he isn't too into toys or treats, which makes crate training (among other things) a lot harder to do.

Have you tried a puppy sized Kong with peanut butter in it? I have yet to meet a chi that doesn't like that... what about an old tshirt you've worn that you could put in there as well that could help too.
With each new pup I get I put their crate next to my bed at first until they get used to it. Just brainstorming some ideas here

Since he is picky with treats try putting a Bully Stick in with him...most dogs love them, and he might start chewing it later, not immediately when he goes in.those whines are so sad, but stay strong! You are only putting him in there when you have to and for his safety :)

I actually just started giving him peanut butter today to see if he likes it. He goes for it and seems to like it but he's still very shy, he moves his head away as soon as I bring the peanut butter to his face. How long do you think until he doesn't shy away from it? His crate isn't very far from my bed, I have him sleep in his bed (I have a pee pad in the bed because he constantly pees just a little bit on his bed every now and then) which I put on my bed so he can cuddle with my hand when he falls asleep. You think I might be making him too dependent on me to fall asleep? I can get an old shirt for him, yeah.

I have a couple chewable toys for him, hasn't bit even once - he doesn't seem like a biter whatsoever, I'm gonna try rubbing peanut butter on those toys soon. I suppose teaching him is for his own good. Why do chis have to be so cute? lol

Dont worry about the shying away from things. In my experience with 3 of my own and 2 of my cousins they all have a shyness. It is just part of the breed. :) When I went to see Eva for the first time at the breeders she was shaking like a leaf the whole time I was holding her.

When I was crate training my two, an old t-shirt of mine did the trick for both of them. They cried and whined but when I put the t-shirt in, that did it!
Actually, both of them sleep in their crates at night. On one occasion, I tried to leave them out at night to see how they would react and they whined and were restless until I put them in their crates. They went right to sleep. They prefer to sleep in their crates because they have slept in them since they were puppies and I think they feel safe.
