dewclaw removal

Is this needed with chihuahuas? I read that it should be done no later then 5 days after the puppy is born.....If it wasn't done on the puppy then is it bad to have it done after that? Anyone know the typical cost for having this done? I have read its more involved when they are past those 5 days......I am waiting to hear back from my breeder on if she had it done already :wink: I guess I should call my vet and see if its needed and if it is if it can be done when I take her in to get fixed.

Let me know your thoughts on this 8)

Are you talking about the dew claw..........otherwise I have not heard of dogs getting de-clawed but It sounds good (if it did not hurt them which I believe it would) that is usually done right away. Quickdog may know best she has litters.

oops sorry forgot the space....I looked it up on the net and it didn't have a space so I just thought thats how it was spelled :wink: Well hopefully someone can give me more info on that.....I just want whats best for my new baby chi :thumbup:

Out of my 6 chis, I only have one that has had his dew claws removed. I really have never had a problem with dew claws remaining in these small dogs. I have a litter of pups right now and I did not remove the dew claws and do not intend to. Yes, it does have to be done a short time after birth, or if they are older, then it is a surgical removal. I have seem my chis use them when holding a bone or chewing on something. But you do have to remember to cut the nail on the dew claw. I think if the nail gets long that is when they catch them on something and pull them. But when I asked my vet, she told me that during her entire time in practice she had only seen once that a dew claw was torn. In my opinion, that was not enough to removed them. Some larger dogs have quite large ones and some have them on the rear legs, too. That might be the situation to remove them. :wink:

Sp. is almost 2 years old now and he still has his dew claws. He does use them to hang onto bones and chew toys and hasn't had any problems with them. I trim them regularly so they don't get too long, though.

Hope that helps from a "what will the future hold" perspective.

PS Now, if only I could remember to use the spell checker!
