I don't know how many other people there are on here with diabeties,
My mum was type 1 from childhood, My gran was type 1, I have have been type 2 for a year now,
I don't know if anyone else suffers with cracked heels, I get them real bad and sometimes they are so sore,
I am overweight, But I walk everyday, I do two walks, Take pickle out in the afternoon, for at least half a hour to a hour walk, Then in the evening I do the same with winnie,
Last year when i was diagonised i am embrassed to admit I weighed in at a massive 26 stone, Yes I know one hell of a weight and not wanting to use excuses but I was a battered wife for 14 years by my ex husband! I am now in a stable and loving relationship!
I am now down to 22 stone, That means in the last year through eating helathy and walking daily I have lost 4 stones,
I know That I am still fat! I am hoping to lose more weight as time goes on! I have seen pictures of some of you! And youa re all thin! I could never put my photo up as I am fat!
I am asking does anyone know of any thing that can help with sore heels?

don't laugh, but, the only thing that softens mine and soothes them is to soak in
a dishpan of 3 parts warm water to 1 part milk.
Congratulations on your weight loss. You are an inspiration! :)

And once I get Sox I will be by beach's so will go walking on beach's at least once a day and hopefully the sea air will help! Can't wait to collect Sox!

Try slavering on Vaseline before bed, then put on a pair of socks overnight. My sister swears by this method. She goes barefoot all summer and her feet dry out and crack. She says by doing this, she gets soft, supple heels. I am not sure how much a stone is, but I have lost 119 pounds by following the adkins diet. It really works. I still have a ways to go, but have a good start. lol

EDIT, ok I found out how much a stone is. I lost 8.5 stone.

I don't know if you have bag balm over there, but it is a thick paste you put on cow udders. You can find it in feed stores where they sell cattle supplies. It has lots of lanolin and good oils in it. You can slather it on before bed (very greasy) and put on socks and in the morning, your heels will be more supple.

Be sure and keep a close eye on your legs and feet since diabetes often goes hand in hand with peripheral vascular disease and sores are very hard to heal. Be careful when you trim your toenails too and trim them straight across and not too short so they don't get ingrown or infected. Always wear good, supportive shoes when you are walking. :)

Your weight loss is wonderful! Keep up the good work!

This is the whole reason I have to wear socks and shoes, no sandles or flipflops, i got a infection in my big toe last year took 3 weeks to heal! Somehow managed to cut my toe nail wrong!
I can't have atkins diet as it is based on carb's, And carbs are like giving a diabetic a bag of sugar! That is the stupid thing I eat rice I am asleep for 1 or so, Because rice and potatoes contain high level carbs in them!
Just have to keep on with salads and light meals! I hope to lose alot more weight as the summer days get here!

i dont know if this would be good for you or not, not very familiar with diabetes, but my feet were feeling dry and kind of sore and last week i went for a spa pedicure and it was so luxurious and after my feet felt wonderful. They soak them in something and its like a whirlpool, put all kinds of lotion on, wrap them in hot towels, massage them. omg, i love it!

it's very very important to have good foot hygiene with diabetes I have seen many patients lose many toes and even a foot :( make sure you keep them very clean and the bag balm suggestion sounds great. Congratulations on the 4 stone decrease :)

Here is a couple websites with recommendations for foot care specifically for diabetic people

http://www.foothealthfacts.org/footankleinfo/diabetic-guidelines.htm

http://www.lifeclinic.com/focus/diabetes/foot_prevent.asp#prevent

I also don't recommend going to the spa mostly because they scrape all the skin off your feet and it could lead to a cut which then int urn could lead to infection. It does feel great but I think that in your situation and for all diabetics that foot care like that should be done by a diabetic foot specialist. They often have foot care specialists that come into the hospital here in Canada. I don't know if they have anything like that where you are. But you could always ask your physician.

Hey first of all, congrats on the 4 stone loss, thats fab. Its really not easy to lose weight, what an achievement. I am battling with my weight myself, at Xmas time I was 18 stone and I am now 16 stone, but its hard!!!

I get dry cracked heels from being on my feet all day and wearing crocs at work. I use CCS foot cream 2 x a day and also I use a ped egg.

Keep up the good work on the weight loss. xx

My mum has been type 1 diabetic for over 40 years and is luckily in very very good nick for someone whose been diabetic that long. You should be seen at the diabetic foot clinic, along with the eye clinic and the diabetic clinic (lots of appointments) as diabetics can suffer from lots of problems with their feet. I dont know that much about type 2.. are you on tablets or diet based?

Well done on your weight loss.. You really are doing the right thing for your diabeties it is so so so so hard to keep control of your sugars the more weight you put on. Is your GP/Diabeties consultant supporting you in this? They should be able to send you to a nutritionist so you don't suffer from too many hypos!!!

Well done and keep going!!!!

DONT DO ATKINS OMG its so so so so so so bad for you especially if you're diabetic.. You need slow releasing carbs as a diabetic to allow your sugar levels to stay stable.. STAY AWAY FROM IT!!! Its also so bad for your heart.. you have a high intake of fat and you won't be able to keep it off. You need carbs to function to survive and have energy..

Atkins is also very very high in fat and you mainly lose water weight and muscle mass not fat. Please please go and see a nutritionist.

I disagree with your assessment of Adkins. I have been on it for years, my blood tests are the best they have ever been. I have hypoglycemia and since being on this, I have not had any trouble with it because the carbs I eat are slow release carbs. No refined foods so my sugar levels stay constant. It does not say no carbs, it says low carbs and the carbs you do eat are healthy. imo, of course. Also, because of the higher intake of protein, the body metabolizes fat instead of muscle. I lost 119 pounds, And it wasn't just water weight and my muscles are just fine. :)

hi
My Gp is very supportive towards me and been there helping and said that I am doing very well! My diabetic nurse I see she is great as well, she has offered advice, I am on diet only! I have seen a consultant and he said there is nothing he can do! As my blood sugars are very good! Usually between 5.9 and 7.8, Only go into double figures if I allow myself my monthly treat! This is usually a chinese or curry and rice, That is my treat Oh a little bit of green and blacks chocolate that is safe for diabetics little bits here and there!
I have been to diabetic clinic for my feet I think they call it podiatrist, She did something to my heels and I ended up with bandages on my feet for 2 weeks,She think she was a student as when this other man came into the room he asked what she was doing? She answered I am doing what you said and scraping the dead skin off! He then said not on diabetics feet! Ended up in agony could barely walk for two weeks!
My mum and gran had very bad type 1 diabeties, They were both in a mess with it!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However Diabeties is totally different to hypoglycemia.. Yes diabetics have hypoglycemic attacks.. but its less likely with Type 2 as they generally run high (as you can see from the op's most recent post) Any sort of dietary change should be checked with your doctor if you have any sort of medical conditions. It is not worth putting your life at risk because of a fad diet. I have researched into diets for a number of years now and have spoken to many professionals about it and we need a certain amount of everything.. FYI if you start raising your carbs again you'll put your weight back on.

Sandy.. thats very good.. I would speak to the clinic and get another appointment they should be able to fix the problem.. and ask for someone who knows what they're doing.. You really must look after your feet. Type 2 can turn into type 1.. although with continued weight loss your diabeties will probably get better
