I have ALWAYS babied Peanut and now I think it has become a problem..

There are a couple of BAD habits that Peanut does (seems to be my fault) and I was wondering if anyone knows how to change them.

1. He only eats while I am around, I am afraid that if I have to go out of town one day he will starve himself.

2. He only plays while I am around, my family members say that when he cant see me, he is miserable.

3. He wont go for walks without me. For example, my mom has walked him a number of times and when I am inside the house, he will RUSH to come back in with me. If he does not see me in the house when he goes for his walk, he takes his time.

AND
4. He gets aggressive when I am holding him if there are people around that he doesnt know or other animals. If someone else is holding him, he doesnt even seem to care about the other people.

Is there anything I can do to change this?
I am sorry this is so long

Chico is kind of the same way with me, the only difference is he will eat and play regardless if I'm around or not. I just think maybe he is very attached to you. I'm not sure about the eating or playing or walking, but about the agressiveness...maybe try to socialize him more? If he gets used to other people and animals being around you, maybe he wont be so agressive. BTW...Peanut is ADORABLE!

Thank you so much! Chico is adorable too, I love his marking :)

The weird this is that Peanut has been socialized... The second day I had him, he was introduced to a 100 pound labrador. They see each other frequently and he has no problem being around him. He is VERY selective with the people and animals that he "decides to like". Im trying to introduce him to my new puppy but he is being a bit difficult.

Thank you for your reply! :) I thought I wasnt gonna get any. lol

i don't see it as you maing a mistake. sounds like you did everything that was recomended. some dogs just bond so strongly with their "owners" (hate that word) that they make themselves sick when they aren't around you. chiwi was starting to get like that but i've been leaving her alone for a few short hours during the day just cause i am afraid she will end up like my pointer and have to be on meds for seperation anxiety. i'm sorry i can't offer you any advice, all i can say is i don't think you made any mistakes.

Thank you and your welcome! I know how you feel though. When I got Chico, I had tons of people telling me "You better socialize him or else he'll be mean and/or skiddish" So I did my best, brought him everywhere I went, even to Wal-Mart in a little puppy carrying bag...lol. Everyone who saw him stopped to pet him, which didn't bother me one bit. It will take some time, but eventually he will probably lose the habits.

Dixie is also very cute! The other day I was looking through the replies and I saw Dixie and I told my Fiance that she was adorable and how I loved her color! I am going to post more pictures of Peanut on the Forum. I have some funny ones with the labrador :)

Luvmypuppet, I didnt know that dogs suffered seperation anxiety. Has your Pointer gotten any better with the meds?

Thank you all for your replies, I guess I am just going to have to be patient and hope for the best!

Thanks,
Yael

my pointer is no longer with us :angel7: but the meds did help her tremendously in addition to behavior modification. my girl suffered from stress anxiety as well as seperation anxiety. the stress anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder went hand in hand and it happened because she was abandoned in the kennel i used to work at and had to live in a cage for 2 months, it made her go a little crazy. then when i took her home and showed her love and affection the seperation anxiety came to play (the ocd came back as well) i was lucky enough to talk to a behavior specialist for free cause with the job i got to go to seminars and i went to one on seperation and stress anxiety and i stayed after the seminar and told the dr about tasha bird and she was floored by her story. so she stayed talking to me for a long time and wanted to study her case but she was in pennsylvania and it wouldn't be possible to take that trip once a week with her in the car. she loved car rides but not long ones (and my car isn't in the greatest shape.) but she kept in touch through e-mails and helped me change her behavior and got me on the right track with the medication.

I am so sorry and I do apologize I didnt realize that the beautiful picture and statement that you have under your replies was about the pointer (Tasha Bird). But I am very pleased to hear that there are people out there that will lend a helping hand for free... Sounds very much like "Chihuahua-people.com"
Poor baby Tasha, atleast you were able to give her the love and affection she needed and deserved!
You were probably and great parent to her and are to Dixie as well! :)

Although I sometimes wish Peanut was more independent, I sure do love the fact that he loves his mommy so much! It makes me so happy to know that we have such a wonderful connection.
Daytona must look so cute waiting for you in the bedroom :)

you mean chiwi ;)

thank you, i like to think i was a good mommy to her, i only got to spend a year with her but i think in that year i got to show her what love was and i wouldn't trade that in for anything. she got away from me 2 times but i caught her, at first i thought that she ran cause she was unhappy but then i realized she was used as a hunting dog and was very obsessive compulsive about it and i didn't know what her come back command was. each time she ran she had her nose to the ground looking for something so that was my clue that she was working, plus the drive she had. once i got her on the meds she was able to enjoy leisurely walks without constantly sniffing out for birds and such.

 i dont think your dog has problems for one thing when a dog gets hungry he will eat i have never heard of a dog starving itself it may be depressed and not eat as much but not starve!! and if you generally walk the dog he is used to your pace everyone walks at diffrent speeds and he may just not like the way outhers are handling him when they walk him and as far as being aggresive towards outhers while you hold him - dogs are protectors by nature your his alpha in the pack it is natural for him to be this way to strangers. of couse bitting would be a diffrent story. and i betcha all dogs mope around when there owners are away dogs have no sence of time so whether your gone 20 minutes or 2 days its forever to them!!! your a good momma to your baby and i personally dont think there anything wrong. but if it bothers you really badly you can always ask a vet.

My Chi has anxiety when I leave and find, she doesn't eat much or nothing at all, when I am not home. However, I have left her several times with an extended family member and she will eat, when they get hungry enough. When I leave the house in the morning, she will go into my dirty laundry and pull out whatever I was wearing the night before. She never chews on it, just lays with it. I think this is sooooo adorable. She is so attached to me, she wants my smell around when I am gone. (I thinks that's kinda gross, but I am not a dog) Anyway, maybe when you leave her, you can leave something that smells like you and this may help some of her anxiety. Keep socializing her. My dog seems to warm up to people, but it does take awhile. My first Chi, LOVES my mother. She goes hog wild and even starts peeing when she comes over. She makes this high pitched bark, that she only does when Paisley sees my mom. My dog has never gotten that excited to see me. She does get really excited when I come home, but nothing like when my mom comes to visit. She will sit on some people's laps and then sometimes she will just bark and bark and bark. She is very selective when it come to others outside the family.

That's what is advised if your dog has separation anxiety issues. I tried it with Dixie, but it just won't do!  And in a couple of months, I'll be moving to Vegas..  I hope she'll be okay with the rents, unless I can take her with me :?

Sally Lolita doesn't have the problem playing or eating, but when I leave her alone....I know for sure she will pee on the carpet. If I am around she will never do it, but as soon as I close the door, leaving her alone...zassssss! she does it. Sometimes not even a minute after i've closed the door.
The main problem is that she's also not that friendly with strangers anymore. Since she moved to Canada she totally changed. When she was in El Salvador, she used to be friendly with everybody, she'd never get agressive. Now, when she sees strangers and they come to pet her, well...sometimes she growls and sometimes she tries to bite (this is not very common though)....I bring her wherever I go and she always sees people, so I don't understand why she got "dissocialized".
Now, I'm scared of people coming to pet her cus I'm afraid she will bite them and I don't let them carry her or pet her anymore....I don't know if I am doing good or bad. I've been thinking about a therapist or maybe take her to doggie training. Maybe that could work for you too...Any ideas on what to do? or possible causes of this "dissocialization"?.
