Hello all! :) I'm a mom to a 6 yr old girl named Yaya and new to this forum. I would love to receive some suggestions on what brand to feed my chihuahua!

I've been making her food but I no longer have the time since I am working full-time and attending grad school concurrently. I usually give her Eukanuba dry food to supplement since that is what the breeder fed her. I recently bought her Canidae ALS before researching it on the internet, and I'm wary of the recall and complaints against the company. I have not fed it to her yet. Is Innova Small Bites a good alternative?

Looking forward to your feedback!! ;)

Welcome to the forum. :D

I feed my dogs a combination of Evo Innova red meat small bites, and Orijen, both ultra premium foods. They do extremely well on both, are in excellent health, and the Evo was what I switched them to after I rescued them, and it cleared up a host of health issues without having to do anything else medically. The superior nutrition did them a world of good. I urge you to feed your dog the best food you can possibly afford. The health benefits of superior food cannot be stressed enough.

Go here: dogfoodanalysis.com. It will rate the food you're currently feeding her, and give you some alternative ideas for a higher quality food.

I feed my crew Ziwi Peak. It's a dehydrated raw dog food for all ages. It's an excellent dog food, and the company is great.

Hello and welcome to this forum!

Innova Small Bites is an excellent premium dog food rated 5 stars on www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Innova also makes Evo (rated 6 stars), which is a high protein grainless dog food and is close to making your own dog food for your chi. In the past my chihuahuas ate both Innova Small Bites and Innova Evo, loved the taste, and the foods were good for them too.

However, Bella has food allergies to grains, eggs, and dairy. Innova Small Bites and Innova Evo contain eggs and dairy (cottage cheese), and I had to change her dog food. For the last 2+ years Bella is eating Wellness Core (rated 6 stars), a high protein grainless dog food. Bella loves the taste of Core too, and is doing very well on this food. She is healthy and has very soft, shiny fur and no dry skin.

Thanks for the feedback ladies! :) I will definitely be ordering Innova. I gave my chi about 8 kibbles of Canidae mixed with her regular food last night and she had horrible leaky diarrhea this morning. Quite shocking since I introduced it slowly and she's never had any trouble adjusting to different foods before. Needless to say, I'll be throwing out the rest of the bag.

Keep in mind too there's a lot of controversy regarding how much protein is 'too much' for a chihuahua. That's the thing with most grain-free brands- they are super high in protein which some say can cause liver problems in a regularly-active dog.
I feed Taste of the Wild High Prairie.. it has a lower level of protein, is grain free, and is a 6 star food.

Which is better, Wellness or Evo
"Better" by whose definition, by what standard? I'm not intending to be challenging, but there is such a wealth of opinion, some of it backed up with fact and empirical evidence, concerning canine nutrition.

dogfoodanalysis.com rates both as 6 star (therefore ultra premium) foods. They're both grainless, both 3 or 4 meat sources as the first named ingredients, both excellent in terms of nutritional content and high protein.

I've tried mine on Wellness, they just didn't like it as much as Evo Innova. But I would be confident feeding them Wellness if they did. As it is, their two favorite foods of all that I've taste tested, are Evo Inova ed meat, and Orijen. They didn't like Evo Innova chicken, even though they loved the red meat formula.

Go figure!

Just wanted to add- this is Wellness CORE that is the 6 star food. The other Wellness varieties aren't grainless. =)
Oops! My bad. Thanks for catching that. I had intended to clarify which Wellness I was talking about, but guess I just had another one of those pesky senior moments.
