lol not really! He's such a stinker tho! We recently had to replace an expensive rug because he decided he was going to start peeing on it. When we were home, he wouldn't pee on it. He'd go to his pad. BUT he'd pee on the rug when we left and the smell was obvious when we returned home. I cleaned the rug multiple times, with multiple solutions, and finally the smell was so obvious we had to throw the rug out. When we're home, he goes to his pee pad every single time, no questions. But when we're away, well...

Well, I've since purchased a new rug. When we leave the house, I cover it with plastic shower curtains because if he ruins this rug too I might lose my cool with him! The shower curtain trick is working. He doesn't like the feel of it and doesn't use the bathroom on it when we're gone.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could get him to not pee on the rug if I didn't want to lay shower curtains down every time I leave the house?

I don't know if they make any kind of spray for dogs like they do for cats that you can spray and it deters them from a certain area. What about a pen you could put him in while your gone? Not a crate, but a 3 X 4 pen with his bed, water, pad, and toys to be sure he doesn't have accidents until he's over that phase.
