My oliver is in the middle of a bout of upset tummy. The vet gave him capsules of metronidazole-50mg each, to be taken 2x a day. Is this too strong of a dose? His diarrhea seems worse. I also was told to give him 1ml of Immodium 2x a day, but some websites say its toxic for dogs. Ugh. Can anyone help? :?

Thanks!
Sarah and Oliver

What does your Chi weigh? It's been awhile, but I recall the dosage was 10-20mg/2 pounds. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. We have several people who work at a vet's office. As far as Immodium, the clinic I worked at recommended Kaopectate instead of Immodium.

I couldn't remember the dosgae off hand, but I did go to a site that I refer to a lot and it has the dosage. It said 1-2ml/kg of weight. 1kg = 2.2pounds. That was taken off this site:

http://www.vetinfo.com/dogmed.html#Kaopectate

Do call your vet and confirm this though. I have had great results with Kaopectate. Good luck and keep us posted.

I recently had to give my puppy Kaopectaid and the vet recommended 2 Ml every six hours. She ways 2 Lbs. I gave her app. 1.5 Ml and didn't do it every 6 hours. I just monitored her next few stools and then gave more accordingly.

It's probably Science Diet I/D. I've had mixed luck giving that exclusively, but I have done Kaopectate plus I/D for severe diahrrea cases.

the high fiber science diets was either w/d or r/d it helps to add bulk to the poop but are weight loss and management foods. the i/d is the equivalent of feeding boilded chicken and rice for the upset tummy.....
