Hi everyone. I took Em into the vet for a routine visit since she has been making 'snortaling' noises for some time now. Vet says it is upper airway, and not to do anything about it. She weighs 10.2 pounds now. Is there any way I can reduce her weight? She is on phenobarbital for focal epilepsy. That is why she is so heavy. Vet suggested that I go down a half a pill. Em gets 'panic' attacks occasionally, and pheno helps with these. She is 8 years old. Is canned better than kibble calorie wise? I just wish I could take off about 2-3 pounds off her.!

Decrease her food portions and increase exercise. It's really all you can do. I have the same struggle with my elderly chi who takes pheno for epilepsy- it puts weight on like crazy.

My mom's dog got huge due to my mom having dementia and feeding her several times a day. Once she was moved to a nursing home after she broke her hip, my dad put Pip on a green bean diet. She got 23 kibble twice a day with a half cup of green beans. Pip is a chiweenie, so she's a bit bigger than a pure chi. But in this diet, she went from 53 (!) pounds to a very svelte 21 pounds in about five months. She was able to play again and jump on the couch and bed again. She was so much happier and healthier. The green beans filled her up and the kibble was enough to keep her healthy.
