Ive been wanting to add some variety to Miley, Reese and Leos diet without eliminating their Orijen kibble as its convenient to feed, literally the ONLY dog food Reese has ever liked (many kibbles and THK), and I feel its a great quality food for them. Still, I think theyd enjoy some variety and Id like to incorporate a bit of raw without plunging into it full on. Im also hoping it will help with Reese's skin- this dry winter air, in addition to his environmental allergies, has turned him into an itching machine :(
I ordered the smaller size bag of Stella & Chewys freeze dried "Dandy Lamb" patties and thought Id give it as a meal maybe 2x a week or so. They normally eat 2x a day, about 10-12 hours apart. Ive heard as well as seen here I think that raw should not be given within 6 hours of a kibble meal, so I think that means its ok? Will it be too jarring for their systems to eat Orijen at most meals and then the S&C occasionally?
I think there are some raw feeders here who do S&C patties every now and then, are the feeding guidelines pretty accurate? It says 2.25 patties/day for a 6 lb dog...I havent seen the patties but this sounds like a lot! It also sounds like it would be verrrrry expensive to feed it exclusively, even to chis- if I fed just S&C to my 3 it would be like $5 a day! Yikes!
And last question- is it okay to give to Leo too, hes only 5 months and it says "adult" on the bag? Im assuming its really fine for all life stages though.
Oh, and any fave formula recommendations would be welcome too. If they like the lamb I thought Id do the duck duck goose next, just to get some more protein variety.
Thank you!

I am a big fan of S&C. I like their quality control and they have an awesome product. Brody loves the dandy lamb the best. I have him on the beef now and he's not near as keen on it as the lamb. The duck is his least favorite. But he is Mr. Picky. Your mileage may vary. ;)

I give him 1/2 of one patty with a tablespoon of warm water to rehydrate it to a canned food consistency when I use it in place of a meal. NO WAY would I give him 2.25 patties a day. That's wayyyyyyyyyyy too much food in my opinion. He weighs 5 pounds. I'd start your kids off on 1/2 of a patty for a meal. You can titrate up as needed.

Yes it's fine for all life stages. All 3 of yours can eat it, no problem.

I'm anxious for you to incorporate it! I think you'll really like it. You really can't find a better kibble than Orijen, so adding in the S&C is icing on the cake.

I asked a similar question regarding THK. So glad you asked this because I can get Stella and Chewy's on the ground. Also glad you answered Tracy. I appreciate it. I feed Orijin kibble and Hope has tried, and liked, THK but since it is easy to get S&C, I will try that.
I was not clear if dehydrated was considered true raw as you also feed regularly.

Thanks ladies!

Freeze dried like Stella and Chewy's and also ZiwiPeak (which is air dried) aren't "true" raw in my book, but they ARE processed very little and that is the difference. They aren't cooked either, which would make them 'raw' in that sense. It is a very convenient way to feed minimally processed foods and that meets a lot of consumer needs. These products are definitely a step above kibble in my opinion.

I looked good and hard into supplementing my 3 with S&C for awhile, and it was just going to be way to expensive. I finally decided to go with ZP, and I'm so glad I did. Besides the obvious benefits they have shown from the switch, it's lasting me waaaaay longer than I ever imagined. Now that I've been feeding it for about a month, I figure the 11lb bag I bought is going to last my 3 chis almost 8months! (I portioned and froze the majority for freshness, and I do still supplement, with eggs mostly.) Still, if you're concerned about the cost I would suggest going for ZP. :)

Let us know if you do try it and how much it yours actually need vs. the feeding recommendations!

Thank you Tracy! We have a Mr Picky in our house too, but I think between the three of them someone should be willing to eat any of the flavors. Do you or Brody have a preference between the freeze dried and the frozen patties?
Im happy to hear their feeding guidelines are off, that sounded like a LOT of food, and it really didnt make sense to me that they would need to so much S&C when they need such a small amount of kibble.
Im excited to try it, and Im really hoping it will make a difference in Reese's skin. Im very happy with the Orijen and they love it, but if theres something else I can add to benefit them then I want to try it!

I was excited to try THK too, but only Miley seemed to like it so that took some of the wind out of my sails. I think something like S&C is a little more convenient too, I found the THK kind of a pain to prepare.

Wow! Thats awesome that youre able to get so much out of one bag! I am not too concerned with the cost at this point as Im only going to add it for a few meals a week, but if I end switching them off Orijen completely it does sound like the ZP is the way to go. I may have to try some of their stuff as well and see what our three think of it. Thanks for the tip!
Ill keep you guys posted on how they take to the S&C, I did order the small (16 patties I think) bag last night so hopefully we get it sometime this week.

I'm quite sure I read on the S&C's package that puppies need a bit more than an adult would (based on weight). So if your 5mo weighed 3lbs...feed them based on a 6lb dog. I use the frozen patties & do feed a whole (small) patty at meal time to each though.

I love Stella & Chewy's & think it would be a great supplement to the Orijen! :)

The actual frozen raw patties are much cheaper as far as S & C goes. We feed that almost exclusively outside of RMB meals, along with SOME THK/raw ground meat mixed in. Our dogs have never been healthier and it really shows when you see them next to dogs that are equally as well cared for but fed kibble. Maybe someone near you carries the frozen...I never even notice the cost, and, I have 5 now.

Thanks Heather! Leo is just about half the weight of Reese and Miley, so I think feeding them all the same amount should work. Are the small frozen patties the same size as the freeze dried? It sounds like I may have to play around a bit to find the right portion for them.

Thanks, that is good to know! I didnt even notice there was a difference in cost between the frozen and the freeze dried. Im glad I ended up only getting a small bag to start, I had the large bag in my "cart" and then decided starting small and seeing how we all like it might be smarter. No one here carries it, but Kansas City is only about 40 minutes from us and there are several stores that have it there so Im sure I can find the frozen. Once I know they like it I can just stock up.

Stop bragging! ;)

Btw, I found ZiwiPeak & Stella & Chewys (frozen patties) cost about the same to feed. :)
Do they like one better than the other? I chose S&C over Ziwipeak largely because it just looked more like "food" to me, but Im sure dogs dont notice lol.

Kristi, not that you don't have anything going on or anything but you need a new siggy.
Yes! I told Drew that you got another puppy and showed him the pics (sometimes I force him to take an interest in the forum :) ) and the first thing he said was "why isnt she in her siggy???" lol

You all have me curious (again) about SC frozen. Doesn't it have veggies/fruits in it? I remember looking it up a long time ago, but have since forgotten. I remember thinking it was a lot like the NV medallions.

The frozen does have veggies/fruit. I am not sure what the actual amount is and I keep meaning to find out. The NV medalions its very minimal, about 5%...which I think is fine. I will have to make it a point to find out the ratios this week.
