Flea and Heartworm Question

Hi!

I currently use Advantage on my pups to prevent fleas and I give them Heartguard for heartworm disease prevention.

As far as the Heartguard is concerned, I'm having a VERY hard time getting my pups to eat the chewable tab. I've tried to disguise the tab in soft food. I've cut the tab in small pieces and slipped it in gravy, even hamburger meat juices. They are just too stubborn to swallow all of it. I'm lucky if they consume a 3/4 of it.

Anyway, I'm interested in trying Revolution since it's a topical treatment that helps prevent fleas AND heartworm (among other things). Wow, talk about killing two birds with one stone.

Does anyone use Revolution on their chi's? Does anyone NOT use Revolution for one reason or another?

Thank you.

Kemo was on Revolution when I got him and none of the vets around here liked it. Once I compared it to the other products (although it does seem well rounded) it was not a very effective product.
That is weird you cant disguise it..........I just told Boogaloo try liverwurst. Make it small and put the meat around it. Also do not use BIO SPOT that has a horrible reps for killing chi's.
The pills are not that big you guys have very alert dogs :D
Tucker takes Interceptor for heart-worm prevention. It is a really tiny pill and he eats it up and looks for more. :) We use Advantage for flea prevention.

Mikey loves taking his heartworm pill, his antibiotics. To him it's just another treat lol.
The topical stuff that does heartworm does not do anything for ticks. So if you have ticks where you live, you should look for another kind of heartworm medication.

I have always had good luck smothering pills in peanut butter for the dogs.
Kinda messy, but it seems to work.
Hi BabyPascale!! Where have you been? I am so much thinking of getting another chi, so I kinda look for your posts to hear about your 2 together!!
I used the Heartgaurd and put it in 2 tablespoons of canned Wellness dogfood (I tore it apart into small peices) and she ate it and didn't notice. We use Advantage and I have to say I know it is good stuff, cuz we have Fleas bad in my area. We did have the yard sprayed too, but we are close to alot of trees and some land, so I know they are out there and we didn't have a freeze last winter at all, so my vet said there is a major outbreak of fleas right now here. Love the Advantage!!
I think everyone covered all the good ways to hide the pills. Heart-guard is chewy so I have no problems. Have you tried to tear it up into tiny piece's and mix it in with a small amount of wet dog food? Or beef stew? I make beef stew for the dogs once a week, with carrots potatoes, celery, and beef. They love it!!! I can hide anything in that. maybe try wrapping it in cheese?

You can also just open their mouth and place tiny pieces (only one at a time) on the back of their tongue, if their spit it out try it again and this time hold their mouth closed. (I had to learn to do this for a cat once)

Best of luck,
MD
Ugh I forgot to say that Kemo takes Interceptor and Frontline Plus.
Just use peanut butter, scoop a marble size amount of it on your finger and tuck the pill down in it, the dog will lick the whole chunk of peanut butter off your finger and down the hatch it goes!
Do not use this shot.

Have you heard of this.[/b]
I think my sister's dogs got that heartworm shot :( They aren't having any problems though.
yes, proheart6 is a horrible drug. i'm so glad it's been recalled. so many dogs have died because of this medication. the monthly medicine is so much better!
Revolution

Flea is on Revolution treatment - and I can completely vouch for how well it works. Flea came to me with a nasty case of ear mites. And after the treatment...gone-zooooo!! She had her last treatment today, actually. And it is the easiest thing in the world to apply. It's topical - and you just empty this tiny vile onto the back of the neck btwn shoulders...and you're good to go. I'm a fan for sure.
Our vet clinic posted a notice that they are no longer giving that injection. Not all dogs have side-effects from it, but some have died after receiving it. :(
