I was interested in learning how to design a website. I am wondering, for those of you who know how, how did you learn? I know there are courses available here, but they don't start until Fall, and I am interested in learning now, so if I take a class in the future, I have a clue on what I'm doing. Any suggestions how to go about learning to build/design a website?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I personally started here:

http://www.annabella.net/html.html

and kind of went from there. I use a text file for editing; you can start with a text file, and when you save, use "save as" and add .htm or .html to the end. I also do all my own graphics and things. I do use javascript and dhtml plugins, like at www.dynamicdrive.com .

Here's a few sites I've done:
http://thegliderplayroom.com/
http://thegliderplayroom.com/rd/
http://thegliderplayroom.com/leyna/
http://thegliderplayroom.com/tansy/

The last two are mainly just websets, but I plan to add on to Tansy's site eventually, with maybe a webstore and her own url.

My personal style is pretty simple, but they don't look too "pagebuilder" if you kwim. I love doing sites, I do websets for fun when I have the time. (which isn't too often!)

I've had a website almost constantly for.. hmm.. I'd say 6 years. Wow. I taught myself, too.. by reading everything I could find on the internet. By the time I got around to taking the classes my high school offered (I needed the credits), I was so much more advanced than everyone in the class (and the teacher!) that I got credit for showing up but didn't have to do any actual work.

Here's my current site (ignore the lack of content, I just built this sucker 2 weeks ago and have been busy with work since then). It's just a personal/blog site. There's a page for my chihuahua Martini under "Stuff".

It's a totally fun hobby once you get going on it. I never had any formal training in a classroom setting, I just searched for tutorials that showed me what I wanted to know. And I'm always learning something new! I'm not even close to being good enough to do this for a living, and probably never will, it's such a competitive field to go into.. but I do it for me and I enjoy it immensely!

Good luck!
