Frasier's Check Up

Frasier just had his first official exam. I was right about the breeder's shots. One set was worthless the second set is only okay if I trust that she maintained the vaccine properly - which I don't. But anyways, Frasier got all his shots and his heart and lungs and everything checked out perfectly. :) He gets one more set of booster shots which is mostly just to make me happy. He's gained a pound since I got him. He's a BIG boy  6 and 1/2 pounds now.

I learned something from this which I wanted to share with everyone since all of you have been so helpful to me..

Puppies only get more than one set of shots because of the mother's anti-bodies which are still in their bloodstream up untill 18 to 20 weeks of age. Those anti-bodies somehow interfere with the vaccine. Once the puppy reaches 20 weeks (Frasier's age) only one set of shots is really necessary because the anti-bodies are gone by that age. As I said above the second shot is only to make me happy. I never knew this, I just thought all 3 sets were necessary.

Yeah I learned that too although my vet uses a different time fame. I said to myself tha twas a waste of money then as she did not go anywhere that would have hurt her........

I do not believe in boosters either. I let mine get their one year and then they are done..............I have done alot of research and its the same for us our antibodies remember and when you give the boosters it does nothing! Parvo can still be caught regardless of vaccine too, which I never knew.
I didn't realize that about the boosters! Callie somehow missed her last booster of Distemper/Parvo and they want me to bring her in for that next week. I guess I will since it is her last one but I didn't realize they could still get Parvo even though they have been vacinated against it.

How old is Frasier? He seems to have the same body style as my Cody, the chi on the right as you are looking at my siggy. Cody will be 9 mos on the 20th and weighs 9 lbs. He isn't fat, just tall and lanky. Cody weighed 6.4 at 6 months.
He's almost 5 months and 6.5 lbs.

I never heard they can still get parvo. Is this true?

I know I read that....so I am sure people will dispute that - which is fine. who says what I read is 100% true? but I tucked that in the back of my mind. I am sure the vaccine helps....but ya know what if they are gonna get it they are gonna get it.....period. Their destinies are not in our hands ultimately. Dont worry just love your baby :D
It sounds like Frasier will be about the size of Cody. Frazier is soooo pretty! I just love his coloring! :)

Ok Kemo's Mama. :D
All babies are born with antibodys to specific diseases if the mother had either been properly vaccinated or had the disease at some time. It is necessary to inncoculate your puppy after so many weeks as these antibody fade from their system. They need to build up thier own protective antibodys. I would never take the chance on one of my pets becoming vulnerable to a terrible disease just because I saved some money. I don't like to be " taken to the cleaners " either but some expense is part of health care for all family members. Being innoculated for certain disease does not fully prevent you catching the disease, but.... and this a big but.........you will have a better chance of fighting off the disease with some antigens in your own system . I don't mean to preach and certainly each of us has to make the decision we feel most comfortable with, but I for one, will not put my pets at risk.

Neither would I but the way my vet explained it that noones knows when that window is that the antibodies stop but by "x" weeks its gone, so when you know your dog isnt going out in the dead of winter and exposure is limited why put the dog thru several series of shots! That was my point.

Yes Its true :( Its kinda like you getting a flu shot but still catch the flu
Yes, it is true if your dog is vaccinated it can still get parvo. however, I know from experience that if they are vaccinated they can have the ability fight it off. My dogs had gotten the symptoms but were able to fight off the disease. had they not been vaccinated I would have lost them for sure. That is one shot my babies will get. As for the other vaccines Daytona recently had gotten DHPl+P then at same time A Lepto. I can tell you for sure, never will any of my dogs get those again at same time. I have done alot of research at a site of a veternerians. I have chosen to give my dogs shots myself. I had done it before when breeding my rotti and her litters also. what people may not know is you can test and treat your dogs at home for the same things the vet does. I will however continue to take them to the vet for emergency and anything I know i cant handle. You can order vaccines and such at http://www.omahavaccine.com/ or http://www.jefferspet.com/ssc/.

I must say I am in no way telling anyone to vaccinate themselves just suggesting for those who have or can get the proper instuctions and experience on how to do so. What each individual does is up to them. I certainly dont want to be accused of telling someone who does not have the knowledge to do something that would cause harm or danger to thier pet

Every time I try to use the Quote function somethig goes wrong. But, someone mentioned saving money. Money is not a factor in Frasier's health care. My vet explained it as Kemo's mama said, it is not known how strong the antibodies are and what antibodies are present, but it is known that they are not present at X weeks. So at X weeks only one set of shots is necessary. Any additional shots after X weeks become pointless. Frasier is getting one more set of booster shots anyways just because I'm overprotective and paranoid.

SC - I have to go browse the pic forum and find Cody. :)
