I don't think it is all that unusual. Why do they do it? -- Who knows....maybe for the same reason some of our chibabies will eat their poop. Yeah, I know - gross to us, but to them it is perfectly normal.
I don't think it has anything to do with punishment for going in the wrong place, lacking in vitamins or nutrients, etc. I think it is strictly animal instinct handed down over many generations. It is quite common for animals in the wild to do this.
I do think this is something they normally outgrow in time. Jasmine would try to eat her own poop when she was younger, if I didn't pick it up right away. She's 10 months old now, and I haven't seen her try to do this in quite some time, nor have I seen her licking on her pad after urinating in a long time. So, there is hope!!
