Gross... but I need answers...

1269 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  BeamerFritzyKosmo
I've noticed that Cha-Cha has been licking up her <ugh> urine after peeing on the pad. What the heck is that all about???? :(
Her pads are clean and she has plenty of clean water and food.... We have never punished her for any type of bathroom mistakes. So, I don't think she is trying to hide the fact that she went to the bathroom. I tried to find some answers on this by doing a search in this forum but couldn't find any previous discussions on it. Can anyone tell me if their Chi has done this or why they do this???
Thank you

I don't think it is all that unusual. Why do they do it? -- Who knows....maybe for the same reason some of our chibabies will eat their poop. Yeah, I know - gross to us, but to them it is perfectly normal.

I don't think it has anything to do with punishment for going in the wrong place, lacking in vitamins or nutrients, etc. I think it is strictly animal instinct handed down over many generations. It is quite common for animals in the wild to do this.

I do think this is something they normally outgrow in time. Jasmine would try to eat her own poop when she was younger, if I didn't pick it up right away. She's 10 months old now, and I haven't seen her try to do this in quite some time, nor have I seen her licking on her pad after urinating in a long time. So, there is hope!! :)
... AND if you have a cat, expect the pup to find the litterbox and munch on kitty poops. My vet calls them "puppy tootsie rolls".

I had to buy OmaKitty a covered box that Cooper can't get into to put a stop to that. :thumbright:
I was told they do that because when they were a baby the mother licks up any pee from her babies so that's where they learn it from! Its normal though! Lola loves munching on her poo if I don't catch her when she's done one! It tastes great to her!! :D :D

Its normal as long as her "area" doesn't look red or inflammed. If she has any type of discharge she may have a yeast infection or a UTI. Keep an eye on the area for any irritation.

Thanks everyone for your input
Actually, she has been licking herself down there a lot lately and doin the butt scoot. I've checked the area for "hot spots" or irritation and don't see anything. Maybe she does have a urinary infection since she's constantly licking down there...?
If she had a UTI she would be wanting to pee often and maybe dribbling pee. She'd be licking the area because it would be painful for her to urinate and would burn some. This may sound awful but take and fold back the area and get a good look inside to see if you can see anything milky or any smell. Just keep an eye on her but if anything I mentioned above is going on have the vet check her out. Butt scooting would let you know that her anal glands are probably full and need expressed. You may want to go for a checkup anyway to have her glands expressed and have the vet take a peek at her area to make sure there isnt anything going on that shouldn't be
Thank you so much BeamerFritzyKosmo! I appreciate your input on this sensitive issue.... I will take your advice. :hello2:
Your very welcome
