Hartz To Pull Products Following Pet Deaths
Products To Be Relabeled Immediately

POSTED: 3:33 pm CDT June 8, 2005

Hartz Mountain Corp. will stop production of several flea and tick products that may have caused numerous deaths in cats and kittens, Local 2 reported Wednesday.

It includes the following pet product brand names.
Hartz Advanced Care 4 in 1 Flea & Tick Drops Plus+ for Cats and Kittens
Hartz Advanced Care Brand Flea and Tick Drops Plus+ for Cats and Kittens
Hartz Advanced Care 3 in 1 Flea & Tick Drops for Cats and Kittens
Hartz Advanced Care Once-A-Month Flea and Tick Drops for Cats and Kittens

Hartz agreed to relabel and then stop production at the insistence of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the agency said.

In the short term, the agreement calls for immediate relabeling of the products. The new labeling will state that the products are not to be used on the most vulnerable animals, including cats and kittens that weigh less than 6 pounds, cats older than 13 years, or kittens less than 5 months old.

Hartz will stop all new production of the cat and kitten products by Sept. 30, 2005, and not sell or distribute any affected product after Dec. 31, 2005.

"EPA is taking this action because there are safety concerns with these products,'' said Susan B. Hazen, principal deputy assistant administrator at EPA. "Pet owners should be alerted to these concerns, and may choose to transition to alternative products. We take seriously our obligation to ensure that pesticide products, when used as labeled, are safe."

The company agreed to a prohibition on any remaining retail sales by March 31, 2006. This orderly transition allows consumers and distributors to move to alternatives flea and tick products and will be strictly monitored.

Hartz will also be notifying their distributors and retailers of the changes in order to ensure a workable phase out.

I think it's because they are so afraid to test anything on animals these days for fear of reprisals from PETA. I have DOG shampoo that says it wasn't tested on animals. I would LIKE for it to have been tested on at least dogs.

There is GOOD testing and there is BAD testing. Bad testing is they shave the animal raw and put products on that area, putting products directly into the eyes etc. etc.

Yes but its not just Hartz, its Bio spot, etc... all and any flea preventitives that are sold at Walmarts, Pet stores, etc... are all dangerous and all have killed numerous pets:-( Even Frontline and the other brands that you get from the vets can also be dangerous and cause a reaction in some pets:-( I thankfully have had no issues with Frontline but I have had bad reactions from some of the other brands sold at Walmart and PetsMart years ago before knowing any better, Thankfully it wasnt severe enough to have caused death in my babies.

I went to the vet and got advantage..... It's so hard to find something that is good.. She only had 4 fleas she got them from what I have narrowed it down to as a big fluffy great pyrenese she had encountered earlier in the day.. I found them 2 hours after the meeting of the dog.. but i didn't want to become infested with them..i was reading that fleas can lay 2000 eggs a day..

Yep you can get a infestation in a matter of no time:-( You can also pick them up anywhere including your own yard as squirrels and other wildlife carry them as well. I went over to a friends house with my two the other month and as soon as I put them down in her yard I saw a flea and had to treat as soon as I got home:-( Her dog is treated to but they were in her yard.

www.hartzvictims.org is where people have posted stories about their experience using hartz most stories are not good.. But thankfully I found this site when researching flea preventative methods..
Thanks for the site. I had no idea of the problems with hartz. I used it years ago but didn't think it worked that great so I changed to frontline plus.
I Haven't had any problems with frontline and it works.
