I'm so glad I'm not the only one that's done that!!
I've taped Cooper and OmaKitty a million times! When I leave, we have a routine of where I tell Cooper goodbye, then I go to OmaKitty, give her a kiss and tell her she's in charge while I'm gone. When I'm working, I always give Cooper a Greenie as I leave. He loves the Greenie more than he loves me so he doesn't care that I'm going.
Once I'm gone, Cooper will sit at threshold to the kitchen (he's not allowed in there) and he'll just stare towards the door, then looks at Oma, then back to the door.
At first, he'd sit there forever and sleep in that spot, etc. Now, he waits a short while (probably until he hears the garage door go down) then gets in his blanket on the couch and sleeps. Oma, of course, doesn't care - she's a cat.
When I come home, I make sure to come inside calmly. Cooper will jump up when he hears the garage door going up and wait by the threshold until I come through the door. I say "hey Cooper" in a non-chalont tone of voice. I put all my things down in the kitchen, walk into the living room and ask if he needs to go potty and let him outside. When he comes back in, I give him hugs and kisses and tell him I missed him while I was gone - by then, he's nice and calm.
I think by creating the routine before I leave and remaining calm when I get home, it keeps him from going absolutely nuts at those times. Plus, when he was a pup, I'd kennel him while I'd be gone so he couldn't do the happy dance.
I just can't believe I'm not the only one that video taped my kiddies to see what they did while I was gone. LOL
