How yappy are chihuahua's... every1 i know perceives them as being yappy + snappy so my mother is using it against me that she doesnt want a dog barking all the time or that it could harm my 8month newphew... any help please ?
i my time i've had my chi's which is 8months he's barky when people come around but after a minute or so he stops it's not liek a non stop barkathon. when he was younger i would let him know when i wanted him to stop . you can train your chi/dog to stop barking.
If you properly socialize your pup and train your pup you won't have a yappy nippy dog. The first commands I teach are come, stay and quiet. Come because unless you have 100% recall your dog could get into some serious trouble if off lead outside or even inside. Stay is obvious..you want the dog to remain in the same spot. Quiet is just that..to stop barking on command. I'ts not hard to teach..it just takes time and effort..there's nothing worse than untrained dog..be it a 5lb Chi or a 100 lab.
I have had no yippy or snappy behaviour from my Lexi.
It definitely is down to how you train and socialise them as puppies, the younger the better. Lexi doesn't even bark at people who come into the house, she's so laid back.
I think I was just lucky with her though, I've not really had to train her NOT to bark! She's just happy to share her home
So tell your mum that it's down to how a puppy is trained, but that any dog breed is capable of being yippy and snappy, not just the small ones.
I've had Lily for 3 years and I've only heard her bark once. I always thought chi's were yappy and snappy too but they're not... unless their owners are complete idiots and don't train them properly. My limited experience with chi's is that they are the sweetest, most affectionate breed you you'll ever find. And a ton of fun!
The only time Cooper barks is when he needs to go outside to take care of business, then he gives one good bark and waits.
Otherwise, he doesn't bark at all.
Tell your mother that the reason she sees/hears about yippy and nippy chihuahuas is because people don't socialize them when they're puppies. All dogs would bark and nip without socialization as a pup. The stereotypical behavior of a Chihuahua is NOT the dog - it's the owner not socializing the chi.
Of course, make her make you promise to take it out and socialize it before she makes the deal with you. You don't want to end up with a yippy, snippy dog.
We have had lots of different breeds of dogs and tyson is my first chi , i can honestly say he is the quietist little dog we have EVER had. he only barks if there is a knock at the door and that is only about 2 barks , apart from that he doesnt make a sound and he is certainly not ' yappy' when he is out.
Gadget barks.... but when we tell him no bark he shuts up... but most of the time when he barks it is because Dad came home and he is excited or he is telling somebody hey I'm down here.... hehehehehe and when he hears a noise that isn't suppose to be.... He also has his little play with me bark and his I gotta go potty bark...
but when he barks it is always for short periods of times and when he is told no bark he shuts up.... that is a must in my house... I will not have a yippy yappy snippy snappy dog... no batter if he is 1pound or 1000 pounds it will not be allowed in my house...
i was the same as your mom. i always said i'd never get one of those little yappy dogs. horrible, i know. but mine are the quietest dogs i've ever had. mine only bark when someone knocks on the door and when a doorbell rings on tv. i dont know where they got that from since i dont have a doorbell.
