Can someone give me some advice on how to make my new pup break the habit of tryin to bite on me n chew on my clothing.. She is only 6 weeks i know she is teething. I let her bite on my fingers sometimes but it seems like shes making it a bad habit. I am worried she is not gonna grow out of it when she gets a lil older. whenever i put her on my lap she tries to chew my sweatpants while on me and also when i pet her she thinks im tryin to play with her so she starts to try to bite me playfully. i know she is just tryin to play but i never had this problem with my other chihuahua. I do yell NO to her when she tries to bite me or chew on me .. seems she dont get it yet and also i just take her off my lap instead and try to get her attention to some of her toys instead but most of the time it seems like she really rather make my fingers her chew toy.. I want to break this habit while its still early.. Help pls.. thankyou :)

You have to be consistent. If you let her bite on your fingers, she's going to think that she's allowed to bite on anything else of yours. I would just give her a firm, "NO!" and then just get a toy and give that to her. Try to be consistent though, and she should catch on eventually that this is not acceptalbe. PetStages has some pretty cool teething toys, such as the one you can freeze. I would just get her some chew toys. Good luck!

OMG I have the same problem with Bella. I got her in September when she was 4 weeks and she did the same exact thing, totally different from Murray (my other chi). He never did that. She's about 5 months now and still acts the sameway. I tell her NO! and she'll get into the position like she's going to pounce on me and start barking. I tell her NO! again and give her a chew toy and she'll run off with it for a while. I messed up because at times I thought it was cute and played along with her, so it gave her the wrong message. I had to start again.... and stay consistent with it. Consistence is definitely the key. She seems to be getting better now. Make sure you have PLENTY of toys. I take mine for walks too, which is something someone suggested here and it seems to tire her and calm her down a little too. I bet your little one is soooo cute at 6 weeks! =)

Boop is the same way. I notice we all got our pups too young, mine at 5 weeks, and not biting, or at least not biting too hard, is part of what they learn from their moms. Ours were taken away from their moms before they could learn.

I'm not consistent, I fear. I let her bite/don't even notice her bites if they are very gentle. So she escalates. I think she's better at nine months than she used to be, but she'd still rather chew on me than her toys.

I've heard to take your hands away and not even look at them for a minute or two, punishment by shunning?, and I do that but not consistently. And yip like a pup would when the bite is too hard. Boop will stop and stare at me when I do that, so it's meaningful to her. A very low-pitched "Boop, stop biting" gets her attention, too. A few months ago, she'd be so wrought up that nothing would stop her. Now, she's much calmer and kinder.

Yes, you all got your pups too young. When they're left with their mothers for longer, the mama will teach them that it's unacceptable to bite.
Whenever Carl would chew on my fingers or bite I would yell "ouch!" and then give him a bone or toy to chew on, and praise him when he chewed on that instead.

thats exactly what i was gonna say katie, lol!

...and dont worry, ALL puppies bite you just have to help them along to learn its bad :) (and it wont happen right away, you have to be patient :p )

I never even thought about that... getting her too young. When I got Murray, he was about 2 months already and very timid. But Murray barks at everyone that comes over and runs up to bite their ankles sometimes when they turn their back to him. Bella runs up to them and wants to kiss them and love them. So they are both different in that way too.

Gizmo was biting abit when I first got him but more less playing.. it hurt and I would tell him in a stern voice NO...put him down and give him his toys.. That was then, now he only bites while chewing his toys..
